Chapter Two: Filled with Demons

“I was patrolling in the Ciqing Palace near Empress Dowager Rensheng when I heard the commotion and rushed here immediately. I beg Your Majesty’s understanding!” Feng Bao knelt on the ground, his logic impeccable as he responded to the angry gaze of Empress Dowager Li. His voice trembled with a mixture of fear and determination.
As an official in the palace, Feng Bao’s actions were always meticulous. He claimed to have been patrolling the palace’s security in Ciqing Palace, and many eunuchs could attest to this.
Emperor Zhu Yijun did not believe that a simple statement could condemn Feng Bao to death. If Feng Bao lacked such control, how could he have risen to become the revered Grand Eunuch of the Ming Imperial Palace, holding the reins of the Directorate of Ceremonial?
Since Feng Bao insisted he was on patrol, then he was indeed on patrol and had not been negligent.
What Zhu Yijun sought was merely a furious rebuke from Empress Dowager Li in her grief and anger. Once suspicion was planted, it would take root, grow vigorously, and eventually bear fruit.
Empress Dowager Li trusted Feng Bao deeply—her trust had become one of complete reliance, to the point of dependence. Riding on her authority, Feng Bao acted with impunity within the palace, even bullying the emperor himself.
At this moment, Empress Dowager Li controlled all matters inside and outside the palace. When she decreed the dismissal of Gao Gong, the highest-ranking minister of the Three Capitals, a single imperial edict was enough to strip him of all power.
With such power in her hands, how could she place absolute trust in just one person?
“Smack!”
A crisp slap echoed clearly throughout the Qianqing Palace. Feng Bao, kneeling on the floor—the revered Grand Eunuch of the Ming Palace—forcefully struck his own left cheek.
The slap was so loud that even the two rows of palace maids, motionless like zombies, couldn’t help but raise their eyebrows to glance briefly, then quickly looked away.
Since Feng Bao rose to power, he had acted with unchecked arrogance in the palace. When had he ever suffered such humiliation?
The slap landed solidly, swelling half of his left cheek.
“Smack!” Feng Bao then struck his right cheek with equal force, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth as he spoke to himself, “I deserve this! The late emperor warned me time and again to be cautious! I was careful beyond measure, yet still failed to prevent someone from exploiting a loophole.”
“Smack!” Another slap to his left cheek caused blood to flow freely down his mouth. “I was negligent. As the servant of the Empress Dowager and the emperor, I betrayed their trust, allowing villains to breach the palace. This is my dereliction of duty, and I deserve to die!”
“Smack!” He struck his right cheek again, the force even harsher, blood splattering. His tone was fierce: “Surely Gao Gong, resentful of his dismissal, conspired with these villains to commit such a heinous act. I will find proof!”
“Smack!”
“I deserve death.I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
