Fu Yanzhou glanced at the incoming call.
“It’s Jin Xing!”
He pressed the answer button, and the sound of Jin Xing’s crying came through the receiver.
“Daddy, Lin Zhiwan left. She doesn’t want to stay with me! I hate Lin Zhiwan. I never want to see her again!”
On the other end, Fu Jin Xing sobbed uncontrollably.
She had no idea how hurtful her words to Lin Zhiwan had been; all she knew was that Lin Zhiwan had left, abandoning her alone.
Song Jinhe, standing beside her daughter, felt a pang of sorrow hearing her so upset.
“Is it because of me that Lin Zhiwan treated Xingxing like this? It’s all my fault. Maybe I shouldn’t have come back at all!”
Tears shimmered in Song Jinhe’s eyes. Her once radiant face was now overshadowed by a heartbreaking sense of guilt.
Fu Yanzhou patted Song Jinhe gently on the shoulder and comforted her softly.
“Don’t overthink it. This has nothing to do with you.”
Yet, Song Jinhe’s face remained etched with guilt and self-reproach. She lowered her head, wiping her eyes to hide the faint glimmer of pride beneath her sorrow.
But Fu Yanzhou’s next words caused the flicker of joy in her heart to sink instantly.
“Lin Zhiwan has always been devoted to Jin Xin. There must be some misunderstanding.”
He then turned to speak to Jin Xing over the phone.
“Jin Xing, Lin Zhiwan probably had other things to attend to, which is why she didn’t stay with you. Once she’s done, she will definitely come back.”
Fu Jin Xing had always trusted her father’s words without question.
Sniffling, she asked,
“Really? But she hasn’t stayed with me for such a long time…”
Song Jinhe took the phone, her voice gentle and tender.
“Sweetheart, don’t cry. Is it because you don’t like being alone at home? How about I come and keep you company?”
Fu Yanzhou stood silently beside Song Jinhe. Hearing this, his brow furrowed slightly, but he said nothing.
After all, Jin Xin was her daughter!
Upon hearing that her mother would come to stay with her, Fu Jin Xing immediately jumped up in joy.
“Really? Mom, can you really come and stay with me?”
There was a cautious hopefulness in the little girl’s voice.
She had always loved her mother. When her father took her abroad to see her mother, she longed for hugs and kisses, but her mother never seemed very fond of being close to her.
Back then, she thought perhaps her mother didn’t like her…
But since her mother returned to the country, she called her every day and always held her tightly when they met.
Although her mother smelled a bit too fragrant, causing her to sneeze every time.

Still, she loved her mother very much.
Now that her mother said she would come stay with her, did that mean she could live with her mother from now on?
That would be wonderful!
Hearing her daughter so excited, Song Jinhe felt her heart lift as well.
“Of course, you’re Mommy’s treasure. Mommy is always happy to be with you.”
After saying this, she seemed to realize something was amiss.
Gently covering the phone, she looked at the man beside her.
“If I go over to see Jin Xing, would it be inconvenient? If it is, then never mind. I don’t want you and your wife to have any more conflicts.”
Fu Jin Xing on the other end heard all this. Before Fu Yanzhou could say anything, the little girl protested vehemently.
“No! No! I want Mom to come! Daddy, please let Mom come and stay with me~”
Faced with Song Jinhe’s earnest gaze, Fu Yanzhou said,
“Of course you can. You’re Jin Xing’s mother; you can visit her anytime.”
“Thank you, Yanzhou!”
Song Jinhe immediately shared the good news with her daughter. The mother and daughter talked for a while longer before reluctantly hanging up.
Fu Yanzhou put away his phone.
“Let’s go; it’s time to board.”
“Mm.”
Side by side, they left the VIP lounge and headed toward the boarding gate.
Lin Zhiwan, returning from Dijing Garden, did not go straight home but stopped by her teacher’s place.
She had some academic questions about her thesis topic that needed her teacher’s guidance.
The car stopped beneath the faculty dormitory. Lin Zhiwan carried the supplements she had brought for her teacher as she got out.
The apartment where Teacher Xu lived was one of the earliest faculty residences at Tsing University. The hallways were narrow, many facilities were old and inconvenient, and there was no elevator.
As she climbed the stairs, Lin Zhiwan thought about how her teacher was getting older and less mobile. Maybe it was time to find a more convenient place for her to live.
She rang the doorbell but after a long wait, no one answered.
Checking the time, she confirmed it was the right appointment slot.
Wondering if her teacher had fallen asleep, she took out her phone and called her.
Behind the door, Lin Zhiwan could hear the phone ringing inside, so Teacher Xu was definitely home.
“Teacher Xu, it’s me, Lin Zhiwan! Please open the door!”
“Teacher Xu, can you hear me?”
She knocked on the door but there was still no response.
“Teacher Xu!”

Lin Zhiwan’s unease grew. Worried something had happened, she called the building manager downstairs to open the door.
“Teacher Xu!”
She searched the living room but didn’t find Teacher Xu’s figure. The bedroom was empty as well.
Her anxiety mounting, she finally discovered Teacher Xu on the balcony.
“Teacher Xu!”
Lin Zhiwan rushed over.
At that moment, Xu Wenjun was wearing only a thin sweater, collapsed on the balcony floor.
Her hands and feet were icy cold, and her face was pallid. It seemed she had been unconscious there for quite a while.
Lin Zhiwan called an ambulance immediately, and Teacher Xu was rushed to the hospital.
The doctor said it was likely a sudden fainting due to low blood sugar, but because she had been exposed to the cold wind on the balcony for so long, she developed a high fever and needed to be hospitalized.
After completing the admission procedures, Lin Zhiwan stayed by her teacher’s bedside.
Only after sitting down did fear begin to creep in.
If she hadn’t come today, would Teacher Xu have remained unconscious on the balcony?
She dared not think further…
Teacher Xu had never married nor had children, dedicating her entire life to the restoration of cultural relics.
Now that she was elderly, she couldn’t be left without care.
Lin Zhiwan thought that once Teacher Xu was discharged, someone must be found to look after her to prevent another incident like today.
When Xu Wenjun awoke, she stared at the ceiling for a long moment.
Trying to move, she suddenly noticed someone sleeping beside the bed.
Xu Wenjun gently lifted her hand and stroked Lin Zhiwan’s head.
Her daughter must be about that age now…
She wondered if her daughter was living well.
Did she remember her?
Perhaps she was truly old now, as she found herself recalling the past more often.
Back then, if she hadn’t chosen to take the college entrance exam and left that place, would her life have been completely different?
She didn’t regret her decision, but she felt sorry for that child…
If she ever had the chance to see that child again, she would give everything to make amends…
