Chapter 41: Calling the Police
Shen Siyuan took out his phone, intending to call the police, but quickly put it away again.
Nowadays, mobile phones are all tied to real-name registrations; it would be far too easy to trace the call back to him. Although he was not the killer, he had no way to explain to the police how he had discovered the corpse in the unfinished building, which would only invite unnecessary trouble.
At this moment, Doudou and Yin Xingyue had returned and were sitting on the edge of the bed, looking at Shen Siyuan with expectant eyes. After a moment of thought, he turned his gaze toward Yin Xingyue.
"Xiaoyue, I need you to make a trip," Shen Siyuan said.
Before Yin Xingyue could speak, Doudou jumped up, patted her small chest, and said eagerly, "I... I can help too!"
"You had better stay here and keep me company," Shen Siyuan replied, speechless.
"Brother, where should I go?" Yin Xingyue asked in a soft voice.
"Go to the police station near that unfinished building, reveal yourself, and tell them you found a body inside," Shen Siyuan instructed.
Yin Xingyue nodded, then looked down at the faint, ghostly blue glow emanating from her body. She was much more capable than Doudou; in just two days, she had essentially gained control over the nether-fire within her, unlike Doudou, whose nether-fire was still flickering and bubbling out from the top of her head.
"It’s alright. You’ve controlled it very well. Unless someone looks very closely, they won't notice anything unusual about you." Shen Siyuan understood her concern; the little girl was quite cautious.
"Then, Brother, I'm going," Yin Xingyue said as she stood up.
"Go ahead," Shen Siyuan replied.
As Yin Xingyue prepared to ride the cold wind away, she suddenly thought of something, turned back, and asked, "Brother, are you still there?"
Shen Siyuan was taken aback for a moment, then laughed, "Of course I am."
Only then did Yin Xingyue depart on the cold wind. Due to her past experiences, Yin Xingyue’s personality was extremely introverted. She rarely initiated conversation with anyone. It was only because Shen Siyuan was her master that she felt close enough to him to speak so freely.
-----------------
Yuxiu Police Station was one of the most ordinary stations in the Western District, with nothing particularly remarkable about it. Every day, they handled nothing but trivial matters. However, the jurisdiction they were responsible for was quite large. The entire station, including the chief, consisted of only twelve people—not counting the auxiliary officers.
Jiang Xingyue was an ordinary patrol officer at Yuxiu Police Station. Her primary duties involved traffic management and patrol, which included clearing traffic, standing guard, and handling traffic accidents. Among the many female officers, this was considered quite strenuous work, as most female officers worked in administration, community policing, or household registration management.
Jiang Xingyue’s reason for choosing traffic management and field duty wasn't because the station was mistreating or sidelining her; it was entirely her own request. She loved the feeling of the breeze on her face while riding her motorcycle. She loved weaving through the streets and alleys. Even though she was a woman, she was naturally active and hated staying indoors.
Yuxiu Police Station occupied a fair amount of space and had a courtyard in front, where several police cruisers and private vehicles were parked. As Jiang Xingyue rode her motorcycle into the courtyard, she saw a young girl hovering at the entrance of the station from a distance, so she rode directly toward her.
Seeing the girl’s delicate and timid appearance, Jiang Xingyue’s voice softened instinctively. "Little sister, is there something you need?"
Yin Xingyue felt much more at ease seeing that it was a female officer. She blurted out, "Uncle Police Officer..."
"I'm not an uncle, I'm an older sister. Tell me slowly what happened." Jiang Xingyue turned off her motorcycle but didn't dismount. She sat astride the bike, reached up to remove her helmet, and revealed short, ear-length hair, looking remarkably sharp and heroic.
Jiang Xingyue didn't invite Yin Xingyue inside to talk because she noticed that when the girl spoke to her, she didn't dare to make eye contact, her shoulders were hunched, and her body was subconsciously leaning toward the exit. These were all signs of timidity and wariness, and she was afraid that certain actions might put psychological pressure on the girl. This showed just how much courage it must have taken for her to approach Shen Siyuan in the first place.
"That... in that unfinished building, in the semi-circular building in the center, on the fifth floor, there is a dead person. A woman died there, she was... she was killed by someone..." Yin Xingyue stuttered at first, but she became more fluent as she spoke.
"What?" Jiang Xingyue thought she had misheard, her expression one of shock. Seeing this, Yin Xingyue subconsciously took a few steps back.
Jiang Xingyue hurriedly asked, "Are you sure about what you're saying?"
Yin Xingyue nodded and pointed in the direction of the building outside the courtyard. "It's right there. You... you can go see for yourself." With that, she began to walk toward the exit.
"Wait, wait a moment!" Jiang Xingyue tried to call her back, but the girl turned a deaf ear. She hesitated for a moment, debating whether to get off the bike or pursue her on it, but ultimately chose to dismount and park the motorcycle properly.
But in that brief delay, by the time she reached the gate, the girl had already vanished. She looked left and right down the road; the street in front of the station was straight and visible to the end, yet there was no sign of her. Jiang Xingyue was taken aback.
"Is she that fast?" She felt a faint sense that something was wrong.
"Xiao Jiang, Xiao Jiang, why are you blocking the gate with your motorcycle?" Just then, a middle-aged officer walked out of the station. It was Lin Guoliang, Jiang Xingyue's mentor.
"Master, I just encountered a little girl reporting a crime." Jiang Xingyue called him "Master" because he was the one who had guided her through police procedures when she first joined the station, so they had a good relationship.
"Where is the girl?" Lin Guoliang asked, walking down the steps.
"She disappeared in the blink of an eye. I’m quite confused myself."
"Did she say what the matter was?"
"She said there’s a dead person in the unfinished building ahead, that a woman was killed there," Jiang Xingyue replied.
"What?" Lin Guoliang’s eyes widened in disbelief. A death was a major case. "Is she sure she isn't making a prank call?" he added. But before Jiang Xingyue could respond, he muttered to himself, "Regardless, we have to go check it out."
Jiang Xingyue, who was about to move her motorcycle to the side, quickly said, "I'll go with you."
"Let's go." Lin Guoliang strode toward his own—electric scooter. Not all police officers were part of the motorcycle unit.
The distance wasn't far, and in about ten minutes, they arrived near the unfinished building. However, the perimeter was fenced off, and they couldn't get in. After circling the area, they finally found an entrance that had been pried open. The two parked their vehicles and crawled through the opening.
As soon as they entered, Jiang Xingyue began to curiously examine the unfinished site, while Lin Guoliang took out his phone to carefully photograph the area around the hole.
