Chapter 106: We Are Brothers
In the intensive care room, under the influence of anesthesia, Lu Qi was drowsy and half-asleep. Ding Sina stayed by his bedside, holding his large hand gently and asking, “Does it still hurt?”
Lu Qi shook his head; the anesthesia was still strong, so he couldn’t feel any pain.
Noticing Zhang Peiyue standing by the bed as well, he asked, “Why are you here too?”
Ding Sina explained, “None of us had any money on hand. Zhang Peiyue specifically came to pay your surgery fees.”
Lu Qi nodded. “Thank you.”
“No need to thank me. We’re brothers,” Zhang Peiyue said.
Lu Qi fell silent for a moment, then asked, “Where’s Wen Xiaocheng?”
“My dad is talking with him outside,” Ding Sina replied.
“Has the police taken him away?” Lu Qi’s greatest worry was this. When he came out of the operating room earlier, he saw several police officers, and the atmosphere had been very tense.
“No...” Ding Sina hesitated, reluctant to mention that Xiaocheng had even taken a shower in the operating room...
Lu Qi didn’t believe her. He shook his head, tears falling. “I know you all hid it from me. I saw with my own eyes how he held a knife to the doctor. He must have been taken by the police because of me. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have stayed away from seeing me.”
Ding Sina and Professor Dai exchanged exasperated looks. Though Zhang Peiyue hadn’t witnessed how Xiaocheng had forced the doctor, he clearly saw the police cursing as they left. Seeing Lu Qi so consumed by sorrow was frustrating.
“Master Qi, you’re overthinking. Xiaocheng is right outside the door.”
“I don’t believe it!”
“I’ll call him in.”
As Zhang Peiyue stepped out, he met Xiaocheng, who was startled for a moment. Lost in thought, he didn’t catch the earlier talk about brotherhood, but he clearly heard the last sentence: “Maybe I was wrong.”
Xiaocheng apologizing?
Actually, the one Xiaocheng most wanted to apologize to was Lu Qi in the hospital bed. Though unintentional, he felt guilty about Lu Qi’s injury. After all, it could have been avoided if he had stepped forward to help instead of just watching, or if he hadn’t provoked Lei Yang before...
Inside the intensive care room, Lu Qi saw Xiaocheng enter, and tears streamed down again.
The big guy cried out, sounding almost like a bull bellowing: “Wuwuwu, you didn’t come in—I thought the police had taken you away!” He repeated this three or four times, which oddly reminded Xiaocheng of Sha Shidi...
Xiaocheng chuckled. “No way. Zhang Peiyue’s dad wanted to have a chat with me, so I got held up for a bit. Sigh, his dad really takes his time!”
Just then, Zhang Weishan and Zhang Peiyue walked in, hearing that, their expressions darkened.
“Lu Qi, rest well and don’t worry about the money. Xiaocheng, you two talk. Peiyue and I will leave first.” Zhang Weishan greeted them and left with his son. Professor Dai said he needed to refuel and gave the seat to Xiaocheng.
“We’re brothers—for life!”
“All right, we’re brothers!”
No matter what status or position, if someone is willing to risk being caught by the police to save you—even holding a knife to the doctor—that person is definitely a brother!
Lu Qi smiled, tears still flowing, but he smiled.
Seeing that affectionate gaze, Xiaocheng felt a bit embarrassed and quickly changed the subject. “The police told me just now that Lei Yang and those other three guys have all turned themselves in. Only the one who stabbed you, Xiao Tao, hasn’t been caught yet, but don’t worry—that’s just a matter of time!”
At that moment, Lu Qi’s parents arrived. Lu Qi had called home right after the operation using Professor Dai’s phone, but he only said he had been in a fight and was now in the hospital. When his parents arrived, they thought it was just a minor injury. Only upon learning he was in the post-op intensive care unit did they realize the seriousness.
The towering six-foot-one young man was still just a child in his parents’ eyes. Wu Mei immediately burst into tears upon entering. Lu Songyan was less emotional but furrowed his brows tightly, clearly worried for his son.
“What happened? You even had surgery?”
Lu Qi mumbled, “It’s nothing. That guy used a three-edged blade to stab me in the stomach. It’s okay now…”
Mentioning the three-edged blade made Mrs. Lu shudder. She hurriedly bent over to check the wound under the blanket. Thankfully, her son was alright; if she had heard it over the phone, she might have fainted from fear.
“All right, I’ll go pay the bill first. When I get back, we’ll settle this! Grown up now, daring to fight and even use a knife!”
Lu Songyan turned to leave but was stopped by Xiaocheng. “Uncle Lu, the deposit has already been paid. Zhang Weishan helped with it.”
“Zhang Weishan?” Lu Songyan was taken aback. Though he knew who Zhang Weishan was, he couldn’t imagine why he would pay for his son’s medical fees. Could it be because his son was involved?
Xiaocheng explained further, “It has nothing to do with Zhang Peiyue. The hospital wouldn’t perform the surgery without payment. I didn’t know your phone number, so in a hurry, I called Zhang Peiyue. His family has money and a car, so they could bring the money quickly. Zhang uncle and I talked earlier; he said he’d cover the medical expenses as a way to make up for what happened five years ago.”
Lu Songyan was silent for a while, then nodded. “Xiaocheng, give me his number. I want to thank him later.”
Meanwhile, Mrs. Wu’s tears kept streaming down. Seeing the knife wound on her child, her pain was deeper than his. Holding Lu Qi’s hand, she sobbed without saying a word. Lu Qi felt uncomfortable and comforted her, “Mom, I’m fine. The stab wasn’t deep. It doesn’t hurt at all.”
Though her son wasn’t in pain—likely because the anesthesia hadn’t worn off—his mother’s tears wouldn’t stop. Lu Songyan, growing impatient, asked his son, “What happened? Why did you get into a fight? Didn’t I tell you before not to lay hands on anyone?”
“I…” Lu Qi was about to speak when Ding Sina stepped forward. “Uncle, today’s incident isn’t Lu Qi’s fault. It’s myI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
