Chapter 29: The Lottery
“Huh?”
Lin Mi was scrolling through the trending news when she suddenly clicked into the system’s ‘Daily Tasks’ page, only to discover with surprise that a prize wheel had been added at the very bottom.
After exchanging her energy points for an upgrade, her attention had been entirely focused on the new fifteen-day ‘Trending’ feature. She hadn’t paid much mind to any changes in the task bar. Now, seeing this wheel, Lin Mi belatedly realized what she’d missed.
“That’s right, every time I level up, I get a spin at the wheel. This brain of mine—almost forgot such a perk!”
Annoyed at herself, Lin Mi tapped her forehead. She’d nearly missed out on such a great benefit.
The prize wheel was divided into six large segments, each labeled: [Energy Points +500], [Cash 300,000], [Double Amount Card], [Duration Extension Card], [Unlimited Gold Card], [Better Luck Next Time].
“Wow—these prizes are really something,” she exclaimed, eyes lighting up as she read each option.
Five hundred energy points? That was exactly what she wanted most right now!
As for the rest? Lin Mi tapped them curiously, and sure enough, a detailed explanation popped up.
Double Amount Card: Doubles the balance of your wallet, usable once. (No time limit.)
Duration Extension: Temporarily increases your foresight privilege by three days. (No time limit. Begins upon activation.)
Unlimited Gold Card: Unlimited spending for two hours. (No time limit. Begins upon activation.)
Lin Mi pursed her lips, nearly drooling over the prizes displayed on the wheel.
Heavens! The system had never mentioned that each upgrade would bring such lavish prizes. For the sake of spinning this wheel, she’d be willing to do daily tasks and grind energy points endlessly.
Such a tempting benefit!
What to do? She wanted them all.
She was an adult—why should she have to choose? Why couldn’t she have everything at once?
“Sigh—please, Buddha, have mercy—”
Lin Mi pressed her palms together in prayer, lips murmuring a fervent wish.
She had only this one chance to spin. As long as she didn’t land on ‘Better Luck Next Time,’ any of the other prizes would be a win!
Don’t underestimate the Double Amount Card—even if it didn’t multiply her system wallet as much as the regular upgrades, as long as her balance was high enough, doubling it would be astonishing.
The Duration Extension Card needed no explanation: extending her foresight meant she could gather more information and potentially change her fate.
And the Unlimited Gold Card was even more alluring. Although only for two hours, it would be enough for a wild shopping spree.
After a round of prayers, Lin Mi straightened her appearance, washed her hands in the bathroom, and solemnly pressed her finger to the spinning wheel.
...
Watching the pointer whir rapidly around the wheel, Lin Mi held her breath in nervous anticipation, eyes glued to the spinning colors.
For a moment, she had no idea which prize she should even hope for.
Slowly, the pointer came to rest on the red segment: [Energy Points +500].
“Oh yes!” Lin Mi leaped up in delight.
“Fantastic! I actually got the energy points!”
She clutched her phone and grinned foolishly; she hadn’t dared hope too much, given the one-in-six chance for each prize.
But she’d gotten exactly what she wished for.
It was as if whatever she wanted simply came to her.
Suddenly, Lin Mi paused and glanced down at her phone. Since acquiring the system, it seemed as though her luck had improved as well.
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say everything was going her way.
She had to admit, this system was truly considerate, even providing such humanized services.
“La la la—time to upgrade—”
Humming cheerfully, Lin Mi sat back on the sofa and tapped the energy points exchange button with her index finger.
Wallet balance: 156,231,000
Energy points: 22.
Looking at the measly 22 points left, Lin Mi felt a pang of heartache, but it had been worth it!
A flash of white light appeared, and the phone screen returned to normal.
She immediately opened her recent contacts’ updates, but the next second, she froze.
[Dined with xx Lin Mi, had a pleasant conversation. #September 21#]
What?
Lin Mi stared in confusion, backed out, refreshed the page, and after confirming with the system, opened the friends’ updates again.
Just now, she had randomly clicked on Wei Xun’s ‘Future Updates,’ and the first upgrade result was actually about herself.
The 21st? That was tomorrow.
But what was with the ‘xx’ before her name? An adjective? Some kind of title?
Why did this upgraded ‘Friend Future Updates’ feel like a riddle?
“Ahem—what’s with ‘dined together’? System, can you not use such ambiguous wording?” Lin Mi shifted awkwardly. She and Wei Xun had only met twice, their relationship was perfectly innocent. Was it really appropriate to call a meal together ‘dining together’?
It sounded like a phrase used to describe people with mutual interest—certainly not a platonic relationship.
And as for her and Wei Xun? Completely aboveboard!
“Wait a second!”
Lin Mi suddenly realized—Wei Xun was going to invite her to dinner?
It must be to thank her for her two warnings.
What a strange feeling—Wei Xun hadn’t even invited her yet, and she already knew about it from the system.
Too bad she couldn’t see her own future updates.
She could only get indirect information from her friends’ updates.
Having learned from past experience, Lin Mi paid close attention to every detail after this upgrade, exploring every feature thoroughly.
As expected, no upgrade was ever simple!
This time, the ‘Friend Future Updates’ feature had increased from one day to three days of visibility.
Moreover, a new feature had been added.
Previously, checking a friend’s future updates required mutual friendship status, but now, even if they weren’t mutual friends, she could view the other person’s ‘Future Updates.’
In other words, there was now a forced add function.
Anyone she wanted to know about—as long as they had an account—she could simply enter their name in the ‘Friends’ contact list and add them directly to her system list.
No application needed, no notification to the other party—it was a unilateral forced add.
“Wow!”
Lin Mi couldn’t help exclaiming. This was a powerful feature.
And very cool!
She could now find out anyone’s ‘Future Updates’ at will, and the other person would be none the wiser?
Just thinking about it was thrilling.
From another perspective, this new function practically cemented her identity as a “master of the occult” and allowed her to fully unleash her gift of foresight.
Lin Mi was extremely satisfied with this new feature. Now, she could truly take control.
