Chapter 27: The Clinic, a Feast for the Eyes
Amidst a world bustling with prosperity and merriment, some toil endlessly to make a living, while others contend ceaselessly for fame and fortune. Li Chao, however, was an utterly ordinary man, but beneath this unremarkable exterior lay a heart of rare distinction.
The responsibilities he bore far surpassed those expected of any man, for he carried as well the sacred charge of healing the sick and saving lives—a healer devoted to the welfare of the world.
“Ah, life is but a play,” he sighed, “and to be a man is arduous indeed. To aspire to be a man of true sentiment—how much harder that is!” Li Chao shook his head gently, and his lament was more than a mere sigh; it spoke of the deep helplessness and pain that weighed upon his soul.
Yet these burdens did not make him despondent or idle. Instead, like a lonely boat adrift on a mighty river, he pressed forward resolutely, undeterred even in the face of tempests and gales.
As night fell, thick as ink spilled across the land, darkness enveloped everything. Li Chao sat cross-legged on his meager bed, clutching a yellowed volume titled “The Star-Tempering Technique.” His gaze blazed with unwavering determination, as if he meant to fuse the power of the stars within the book into his very blood.
An entire hour passed, and it was as though he had undergone a complete metamorphosis; every trace of exhaustion vanished, leaving only a resolve as dazzling as the stars themselves.
At dawn, the first ray of sunlight slipped through the battered window, casting a gentle glow upon Li Chao’s face. He sprang lightly from his bed with agile precision. After washing up, he hastily ate a few coarse bites and, hefting the weighty medical kit, strode toward his family’s clinic with steady steps.
The clinic had been closed for over a year, but now, reopening it, Li Chao’s heart brimmed with anticipation and excitement. He pushed open the weathered wooden door, its paint nearly all peeled away, exposing the decaying timber beneath. Standing at the threshold, he sprinkled some clear water, bent down, and carefully swept away the dust as if each speck marked the passage of time, bearing witness to the clinic’s fortunes.
Entering, Li Chao set out the medical supplies he had brought, arranging them one by one upon the counter. Though the clinic was small, it was fully equipped, and the medicines were amply stocked. He understood well that those who sought him would not only need treatment for their bodies, but also solace and comfort for their spirits.
Yet fate, it seemed, relished its games.
The entire morning passed, and the clinic remained deserted. Even the rare passerby would only cast a fleeting glance before hurrying away. Li Chao sat in silence at his desk, lost and dejected. He had believed that with his skill, he could help many cast off the shackles of illness and regain their health and happiness.
But harsh reality struck like a dousing of cold water, snuffing out the fire within his heart. Staring blankly out the window, a wave of indescribable loneliness and disappointment swept over him. Why did no one come? Was his skill lacking? Or was it that people simply did not trust him enough? Or perhaps this society had grown so indifferent that no one cared for the life and death of others?
Countless questions swirled in his mind, but not a single answer could be found. At that moment, Li Chao felt like a solitary boat adrift upon the vast sea, directionless, bereft of hope.
But he did not give up. He knew that as long as a sliver of hope remained, he must persevere. He believed that one day, spring would come for him.
Li Chao did not let disappointment defeat him. He was keenly aware of the gravity of his mission and knew he could not be toppled by setbacks. Summoning his courage, he rose again, pondering deeply and seeking ways to draw more patients to his door.
He carefully designed and produced a series of striking flyers, distributing them in every corner himself. These leaflets were not only beautifully printed, but also detailed his medical expertise and the high quality of care offered at his clinic. Li Chao also erected a prominent sign in front of the clinic, presenting his skills plainly to every passerby. He publicized his abilities through every channel he could, hoping to draw more attention.
To broaden his reach, Li Chao even visited those long plagued by illness, making house calls to patients who had all but lost hope. With genuine concern and superb medical skill, he strove to help each one, restoring their health and hope.
Heaven rewards the diligent. Through perseverance and tireless effort, Li Chao’s devotion was finally repaid. Gradually, more and more patients came to trust in his abilities and virtue, seeking him out by name. In this humble clinic, they found hope for healing and felt the dignity of life restored.
In a noisy, dazzling world, Li Chao shone like a radiant pearl, casting light upon the paths of countless souls. His legend proved to the world that no matter how daunting the trials, steadfast faith and relentless effort would eventually dispel darkness and deliver a brilliant tomorrow. The persistence and struggle forged in solitude became his most precious treasure, gleaming ever brighter.
Li Chao sat quietly at his plain wooden table, thoughts surging through his mind like a relentless tide. As he was lost in contemplation, a tantalizing aroma swept in, as soft and warm as a spring breeze, rousing him from his reverie.
He looked up to see Yu Xin—the gentle, graceful, and virtuous woman—entering with a steaming bowl of dumplings, her face alight with a bright, warm smile. The dumplings’ rich fragrance, mingled with the savor of green onion and meat, seemed to pierce right to the heart, awakening dormant senses.
“Xiao Chao, have some dumplings I made. Eat them while they’re hot,” Yu Xin’s voice was clear and melodious, like water trickling over stones—a pleasure to the ear. Her smile was radiant, warm as the spring breeze.
At her words, Li Chao quickly stood and carefully took the steaming bowl, feeling the warmth from her hands seep straight into his heart, a sudden rush of heat flooding his chest.
“Sister-in-law, you’re too good to me,” he murmured, lowering his voice, his gratitude and admiration unmistakable.
Yu Xin simply smiled and waved her hand dismissively. “It’s nothing at all—just an extra bowl of food,” she replied, her words simple and sincere, but filled with deep kindness and warmth.
Setting the dumplings on the table, Yu Xin picked up a cloth and began to tidy up, her movements deft and orderly. She wiped the table and chairs, put the room in order—every gesture so natural and unhurried.
Li Chao watched her busy figure in silence, an indescribable emotion stirring deep within him. The feeling was at once familiar and comforting, as if she truly were the mistress of the house and he but one of its cherished members.
Sensing his gaze, Yu Xin looked up, a subtle smile playing at her lips. “Xiao Chao, what are you staring at your sister-in-law for? Could it be you’ve taken a fancy to me?” she teased, her tone light and playful, as though she meant to provoke him.
Li Chao couldn’t help but laugh. He scratched his head, a shy smile on his face, but replied with good humor, “Heh, you guessed it! They say beauty is a feast for the eyes—watching you makes even these dumplings taste better!”
Yu Xin blushed at his words, her cheeks blooming like ripe apples, and she shot him a playful, reproachful glance before breaking into laughter. Her laughter was clear and melodious, as sweet as silver bells, lifting the spirits of all who heard it.
She turned back to her chores, her movements light and graceful, like a butterfly in flight. Li Chao sat quietly at the table, his eyes following her every step, a gentle warmth welling up inside him, a happiness he could neither name nor contain.
He was utterly immersed in this tranquil, beautiful moment, savoring the warmth and peace that only home could bring. For a fleeting instant, he felt himself the happiest man in the world, simply because such a gentle, lovely, and understanding sister-in-law was at his side.
In this humble yet tender home, Yu Xin’s handmade dumplings had become so much more than an ordinary breakfast—they spoke of her meticulous care and boundless affection for Li Chao. And though his playful jest was perhaps a touch impertinent, it nonetheless revealed his heartfelt admiration and fondness for her.
Between them, a silent understanding and closeness grew, drawing their hearts ever nearer, and their bond took another step forward.
