Chapter 82: The Beautiful Lady, Feelings Stirring in Secret

The night was as dark as ink, the stars hidden away, leaving only a hazy crescent moon hanging on the horizon, draping the tranquil little village in a veil of mysterious silver. In the air, aside from the occasional call of night birds, there was a faint, almost imperceptible sweetness and tension—the scent of burgeoning feelings.
Li Chao stood beneath the dim light, his shadow stretched long across the ground. His eyes flickered with a tangle of emotions—an intense longing for the woman before him, Liu Dan, mixed with a trace of nervous anticipation for what was about to unfold.
Liu Dan’s cheeks were flushed, her eyes sparkling as though starlight danced within them. She bit her lower lip gently, shy and expectant, and closed her eyes, waiting for that moment to arrive.
Li Chao, visibly nervous, reached out with a trembling hand and softly brushed it against Liu Dan’s cheek.
Her skin was delicate and smooth, silk to the touch, making his heart pound uncontrollably.
In a gentle voice, Li Chao said, “Liu Dan, I like you.”
Liu Dan’s cheeks grew even redder. She lowered her head shyly and replied in a soft voice, “I like you too.”
Li Chao’s heartbeat quickened. His hand slowly moved downward, gently lifting Liu Dan’s chin so she would meet his gaze.
In Liu Dan’s eyes shimmered both shyness and anticipation. She parted her lips slightly, as if awaiting Li Chao’s kiss.
Li Chao’s breath grew ragged. His lips drew nearer to Liu Dan’s, their breaths about to mingle, emotions on the verge of erupting—when fate played a subtle prank.
Liu Dan’s leg accidentally bumped into the old, sturdy wooden table. Sensing the sudden excitement, the table wobbled in protest, as if objecting to the untimely disturbance.
Bang!
A sharp crack shattered the night’s stillness—the thermos on the table rolled off and crashed decisively to the ground, sending water splashing and shards of glass scattering with a piercing sound.
This sudden turn of events was like a dousing of cold water, quelling the heat that had flared between them.
Both Li Chao and Liu Dan were startled, their lips parting in haste as their eyes darted to the broken thermos on the floor.
Embarrassment flickered across Li Chao’s face as he quickly said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to.”
Liu Dan, equally abashed, replied softly, “It’s all right, it was just an accident.”
A sense of disappointment and guilt welled up in both their hearts. They didn’t know how to deal with this mishap, nor how to proceed from here.
Liu Dan’s eyes flew open, a flash of alarm crossing her face before she composed herself, giving Li Chao a gentle nudge to urge him into action.
Li Chao was momentarily dazed but quickly collected himself. He straightened his rumpled clothes, cleared his throat, and tried to sound as natural as possible.
“It’s nothing!” he called out in response to the concerned inquiry from the neighboring yard. Though there was a hint of panic in his voice, it was mostly steadiness.
Stepping into the courtyard, he called toward the window next door, “Sister Yuxin, really, it’s nothing. I just accidentally knocked something over. Please, go to bed early, no need to worry.”
The neighbor’s light flickered briefly, then faded away, evidently reassured by Li Chao’s explanation.
Li Chao sighed in relief and returned to the main room, but the atmosphere had changed.
“That really scared me just now,” Liu Dan said worriedly. “If Sister Yuxin found out about us, what would we do?”
Li Chao patted her hand reassuringly. “Don’t worry, I won’t let that happen.”
“But is it really right for us to sneak around like this?” Doubt lingered in Liu Dan’s gaze.
Li Chao looked at her tenderly and said, “I know it’s unfair to you. But right now, I can’t give you a proper title, and I don’t want you to suffer because of me.”
“I understand your difficulties, but I truly want to be with you,” Liu Dan replied, her voice resolute.
“I want to be with you too. We’ll have a future,” Li Chao said, holding her hand tightly, his eyes full of warmth.
They shared a smile—tinged with embarrassment, a measure of relief, and, above all, a deeper understanding and silent harmony.
“It seems the moon is too beautiful tonight—even time is jealous,” Liu Dan quipped softly, trying to ease the awkwardness.
Li Chao’s lips curled into a gentle smile. He took Liu Dan’s hand and said softly, “Yes, but it doesn’t matter. Beautiful things are worth waiting for. We have all the time in the world.”
The night remained profound and silent, but their hearts had drawn closer through the night’s twists and turns. In the days to come, perhaps this little interlude would become one of their most cherished, unforgettable memories.

Li Chao’s words sounded especially clear in the stillness of the night, carrying a subtle but unmistakable resolve and respect.
His gaze was gentle and unwavering, as though it could pierce the fog in Liu Dan’s heart and reach her softest place.
Hearing this, the blush slowly faded from Liu Dan’s cheeks, replaced by a complex look—part moved, part relieved.
“Chao, you really are… different,” Liu Dan murmured, her tone filled with gratitude for his understanding and a hint of helplessness about her situation.
“I still haven’t officially divorced. Even though my marriage is little more than a formality, in name, I’m still his wife.” She paused, as if searching for clarity or perhaps an escape route.
“You’re right, it’s not quite proper for us to do this now. I can’t let my impulse draw you into unnecessary trouble.”
Li Chao felt a warm surge in his heart. He understood that her words were not only a clear acknowledgment of reality but also an affirmation and appreciation of his “good man” stance.
He smiled gently, giving Liu Dan’s shoulder a reassuring pat, encouragement and comfort in the gesture.
“Sister Dan, I know it’s hard for you now. But please believe me—no matter when, I’ll be here for you, supporting you, helping you.”
His words were sincere and firm, his eyes revealing an unyielding determination.
“We can face this together, wait for the right time together.”
Liu Dan gazed at Li Chao, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. She had never imagined, in a world that often seemed indifferent, that she would meet a man who cared for her, respected her, and was willing to wait.
She took a deep breath, striving to steady her emotions.
“Thank you, Chao,” Liu Dan whispered. “You’ve shown me that there are still people in this world worth waiting for.”
Li Chao smiled, looking at her tenderly. “Sister Dan, you deserve better. I’m willing to wait with you.”
Liu Dan was deeply moved. She resolved to resolve her marital issues as soon as possible and welcome a new chapter of life with Li Chao.
Li Chao, too, was filled with anticipation. He knew there was still a long road ahead, but he was willing to wait and accompany her through every hardship.
“Thank you, Chao,” Liu Dan said softly, each word laden with affection. Her gentle gaze rested on Li Chao’s face, as if to etch his image deep into her heart.
Touched, Li Chao gently held her hand. “You don’t need to thank me. I’d do anything for you.”
“You’re a good man, but I don’t want you to sacrifice too much for me. I’ll resolve my situation soon, and then… we can continue,” Liu Dan replied with quiet determination, unwilling to let him bear too much for her.
Li Chao hesitated for a moment—he knew her circumstances were complicated, but he was willing to wait.
“All right, I’ll wait for you,” he said, his voice resolute, his words carrying all his promise and commitment.
The night remained deep and still, but their hearts had grown closer through understanding and patience. Whatever storms lay ahead, they would face them hand in hand, awaiting the spring that would be theirs.
Liu Dan’s words, lively and decisive, instantly lightened the once-heavy atmosphere. She spoke directly and boldly, without a trace of the shyness or reserve expected of a woman, revealing instead a spirited defiance.
Li Chao was caught off guard by her sudden question; embarrassed, he couldn’t help but laugh.
“Sister Dan, you…”
He wanted to say more but didn’t know where to begin. Regarding Yuxin, he hadn’t deliberately kept it a secret, but he hadn’t brought it up either—after all, it was another complicated tangle of emotions.
Seeing Li Chao’s awkwardness, Liu Dan smiled knowingly, as if she had anticipated his reaction.
“All right, Chao, you don’t need to explain. I know Yuxin’s nature well. If she likes someone, she’ll go after them—no question about it.”
A hint of resignation crossed Li Chao’s face. He knew Yuxin’s personality—she was indeed bold and passionate.
“Sister Dan, about Yuxin and me, actually…”

“Chao, I know what you’re trying to say. I don’t mind. As long as I have a place in your heart, that’s enough,” Liu Dan said with a gentle warmth, fully aware of his feelings.
Li Chao was touched, and he drew Liu Dan into his arms. “Don’t worry, Sister Dan. You’ll always have a place in my heart.”
As the night deepened, their silhouettes bathed in moonlight radiated tenderness. Their conversation brimmed with understanding and trust, strengthening their bond.
Afterward, she pressed a playful but firm kiss to Li Chao’s cheek, the gesture both teasing and filled with the unwavering conviction in her heart.
“But you’d better remember this—while I don’t care about your past, you must always keep a place for me in your heart.”
With those words, Liu Dan turned and strode toward the door, her steps resolute and free.
Not until her figure melted into the night did Li Chao regain his senses, his heart awash with complicated emotions.
He had thought Liu Dan would react with jealousy or displeasure upon learning of him and Yuxin, but she had been so direct and open instead.
Her magnanimity and confidence moved and pained him in equal measure. He knew she acted so because she cared for him, trusted him, and believed she could win his heart.
The thought warmed him. He resolved to cherish the woman before him and protect this hard-won affection, no matter the difficulties ahead.
He also began to look forward to their future—a future with no shackles or burdens, only the two of them, side by side.
Lost in these thoughts, Li Chao couldn’t help but smile wryly, pondering the days to come and feeling a faint, inexplicable worry.
Yet if anyone knew of his musings, they would surely look on with envy and jealousy, for this was the life most men could only dream of.
But Li Chao quickly pushed aside such fanciful notions and turned his mind to more practical concerns—such as his own physical endurance.
He shook his head, dispelling stray thoughts, closed the door, and lay down again, taking deep breaths to steady his heart and prepare for sleep.
Just then, a shrill phone ring shattered the night’s tranquility.
Li Chao glanced at the caller ID—it was Liu Lele, the accomplished and strikingly elegant CEO.
Why would she call so late at night?
A trace of curiosity and puzzlement arose in his heart. Could it be that the ancient pagoda visions that had been haunting him recently really possessed some mysterious power, bringing him unexpected romantic encounters?
Half amused, half perplexed, Li Chao quickly answered, “Sister Liu, what’s the matter at this hour?”
His tone was caring yet tinged with curiosity.
On the other end, Liu Lele’s voice was stern and commanding: “Li Chao, this is business. Mr. Ye suspects that the person behind the attempt on our lives is the same. He’s planning a trap to lure them out. Your help is crucial. Be at Jiangnan Spring tomorrow afternoon. We’ll discuss the strategy in detail.”
Li Chao’s brow furrowed as he quickly agreed and hung up.
He got up and, peering through the gap in the curtains, gazed into the deep night outside, a cold smile playing at his lips.
“So, the conspiracy behind all this is moving faster than I thought. Fine. I’ll see just who is pulling the strings in the shadows!”
Meanwhile, in a rundown house on the outskirts of Kaiyuan County, the atmosphere was equally tense.
Under the dim light, three figures sat together. One, a man with a close-cropped head and a conspicuous bandage across his chest, was the same assassin who had failed to kill Li Chao at the Lijia Fortress days before.
His eyes burned with unwillingness and malice, plotting a new scheme.
“Boss, that guy’s luck is unbelievable—he actually survived,” a wiry man grumbled in a low voice.
The crew-cut killer snorted, a cold glint in his eyes. “Lucky? He’s just a man. This time, he won’t even know how he dies. The boss is getting impatient—we need to speed up.”
Another nodded in agreement. “And I heard Liu Lele is making moves too. We’d better be careful, or she’ll ruin everything.”
The killer’s lips curled into a cruel smile. “Liu Lele? Hmph. If she dares interfere, she can be sacrificed to this game as well.”
