Chapter 30: The Murder Case with Conclusive Evidence

Eight o’clock in the evening!
After dinner, Cao Kun, Wang Shanshan, and Bai Jing brought their discussion of Wang Yifu’s murder case to an end.
There was little point in continuing to speculate without any facts. The most urgent thing was to hire a lawyer and find out what was really going on.
That was exactly what they had decided to do.
They would hire one the next day.
“Shanshan, you and Xiaokun stay home and rest. I’m going out for a walk to clear my head.”
Bai Jing came out of the kitchen, removing her apron as she looked toward Cao Kun and Wang Shanshan, who were sitting on the sofa.
At once, Wang Shanshan stood up. “Mom, I’ll come with you.”
Bai Jing smiled. “No need. Moving today was exhausting. You and Xiaokun stay home and watch television. I’ll just take a walk by myself.”
As she spoke, Bai Jing glanced at Cao Kun and gave him a faint, meaningful smile.
Wang Shanshan was about to say something, but before she could, Cao Kun pulled her aside.
Leaning close to her ear, he whispered, “Shanshan, let Aunt Bai go by herself. So much has happened these past two days. You should give her some personal space and let her process everything on her own.”
Wang Shanshan frowned slightly and whispered back, “I understand what you mean, but I’m worried Mom might do something foolish if she can’t get over this.”
“I see.”
Cao Kun thought seriously for a moment before saying, “How about this? I’ll go out with Aunt Bai. With me there, I’m sure I can keep her safe. You stay home and get some rest.”
Wang Shanshan not only found nothing wrong with his arrangement, she even felt that he truly cared about her.
After all, if she accompanied Bai Jing outside at night, they would merely be two women. If anything happened, they would have little ability to fight back.
With Cao Kun accompanying Bai Jing, however, things were entirely different. He was over six feet tall and solidly built. Even if some street punks tried something, they would think twice upon seeing a man like him beside her.
Wang Shanshan gave Cao Kun a sweet smile. “Then I’ll have to trouble you.”
“Why be so polite?” Cao Kun laughed and lightly patted her waist. “It’s only natural. All right, you stay home and rest.”
Then Cao Kun turned to Bai Jing. “Aunt Bai, I was thinking of going out for a walk myself. Why don’t we go together and let Shanshan stay home and rest?”

“Well...” Bai Jing hesitated briefly, then smiled. “All right. Let’s go out for a walk together.”
The two of them tidied up briefly and left the house.
Watching Cao Kun and her mother disappear from view, Wang Shanshan’s lips curled into a smug smile.
“Thank goodness I have such a devoted simp,” she murmured. “Otherwise, Mom and I really wouldn’t know what to do.”
“Come to think of it, you really are a good dog. You’re genuinely kind to me, too. Too bad you simply don’t meet my standards.”
“But don’t worry. I won’t let you grovel for nothing. At worst, I’ll help you out once in the future... No, twice. That should make up for everything you’ve done for me over the past few years, right?”
...
Time passed in a blur, and before they knew it, it was one o’clock in the morning.
Only then did Cao Kun and Bai Jing return from outside.
By that time, Wang Shanshan was nearly asleep on the living-room sofa, her mind hazy with drowsiness.
“Shanshan, why haven’t you gone to bed yet?”
Seeing that Wang Shanshan had waited for them, Bai Jing immediately walked over.
Wang Shanshan rubbed her eyes and smiled. “I’m not tired yet. Mom, why did you two get back so late?”
Bai Jing froze, then forced a smile. “Oh, I was feeling a little troubled, so I went for a jog.”
Many people turned to exercise to vent when they were upset or emotionally stifled, so Wang Shanshan did not find anything unusual about it.
“Don’t worry, Mom,” Wang Shanshan said considerately. “You still have me.”
Then she looked at Cao Kun. “Cao Kun, thank you for staying out with my mother so late.”
“What are you thanking me for?” Cao Kun waved his hand carelessly and laughed. “The way you put it, you’d think I was doing some kind of favor. I was more than happy to keep Aunt Bai company. There’s no need to thank me. Honestly, I had a wonderful time. I feel great, inside and out!”
Hearing him say that, Wang Shanshan found it even less suspicious.
Wasn’t this exactly how a shameless simp behaved?
In order to pursue her, he had taken the opportunity to curry favor with her mother, hoping to create more chances to get close to her.

It was nothing more than an ordinary act of simping.
Afterward, the three of them exchanged a few words in the living room before returning to their respective bedrooms to rest.
...
Early the next morning, the three of them left home.
Wang Yifu was still being held at the police station, so they needed to hurry and find a lawyer who could learn more about the situation.
In the end, they hired a relatively obscure criminal defense attorney.
Perhaps because he had no other cases at hand, the lawyer went to the police station that afternoon after they signed the retainer agreement.
He stayed there for two hours. When he came out, he gave Cao Kun, Wang Shanshan, and Bai Jing some very bad news.
The evidence in Wang Yifu’s murder case was already conclusive.
The police had obtained video footage of part of Wang Yifu’s attack on the victim. Moreover, they had found the murder weapon lodged in one of the victim’s crucial fatal wounds.
The weapon was a shard of glass four or five centimeters long. Investigators had also recovered Wang Yifu’s complete fingerprints from it.
On top of that, Wang Yifu himself had confessed.
He claimed that he had not intended to kill anyone. He had been drinking, and perhaps had used more force than he realized. Before he knew it, he had beaten the victim to death.
But whether Wang Yifu had killed the victim accidentally or deliberately, the fact remained that he had committed murder, and the evidence was irrefutable.
In the lawyer’s words, there was essentially nothing left to defend.
With evidence this conclusive, even the best lawyer would not be able to change the final outcome by much.
