Chapter 4: Truly a Virtuous and Dutiful Daughter-in-Law

Hearing a female voice from behind, Cao Kun instinctively turned his head to look. To his surprise, it was the girl in the short skirt from the train, smiling brightly as she greeted him. Unexpectedly, he had run into a girl again. Cao Kun was momentarily stunned but returned her smile.
“Hey, it’s you! What a coincidence.”
“Yeah, such a coincidence,” the girl said with a radiant smile as she approached him. “Are you alone?”
“Yes!” Cao Kun nodded with a smile. “How about you? Why isn’t your boyfriend with you?”
She pouted slightly. “He’s mad at me. Didn’t want to be with him today.”
Cao Kun smiled but said nothing.
“By the way, have you eaten yet?” she asked.
“Not yet,” Cao Kun replied. “I was just about to. How about you?”
“I haven’t eaten either,” she said happily. “Since that’s the case, why don’t we eat together?”
Eat together?
Cao Kun sized her up. In terms of looks, she was above average—about an 80 out of 100. But her figure was quite good: a slim waist, a shapely rear, and long legs, easily scoring a 90. If only her bust were a little bigger—unfortunately, it was barely a B cup.
“Sure,” Cao Kun agreed after a brief thought. “Two people eating together is better; we can chat and pass the time.”
Hearing this, the girl beamed even brighter. “I heard there’s a good restaurant nearby with tasty dishes. Want to try it?”
“Sounds good. You lead the way.”
...
Time passed quickly. It was already nine o’clock at night. Sitting by a window seat in the restaurant, Cao Kun put down his chopsticks with satisfaction.
He had to admit—it was truly delicious!
Well, to be precise, he found almost anything delicious now, having endured prison food for ten years.
As long as it wasn’t some dreadful concoction, he would enjoy it.
Through their meal, he learned some information about the girl before him. Her name was Li Tingting, a sophomore in college, traveling with her boyfriend during the holiday. But now, her boyfriend had disappeared after being left behind.
“Good, huh?” Li Tingting looked at Cao Kun with a bright smile, pleased to see how content he was with the food.

“Yeah,” Cao Kun nodded, giving a thumbs-up. “Honestly, I haven’t eaten such good food in at least ten years.”
He was telling the truth, but Li Tingting couldn’t help but giggle.
“Ten years without tasting good food? You must have had a tough life. So, what are your plans next?”
Next?
Next was just to wait for the late hours when fewer people were around, then go dig for gold!
Of course, Cao Kun couldn’t say that outright.
“Nothing much,” he said. “Just finished eating, probably going to find a place to rest.”
Upon hearing this, Li Tingting almost instinctively said, “Then why don’t you rest at the hotel I’m staying at?”
The moment she spoke, she seemed to realize what she had said. Her pretty face flushed bright red as she hurried to explain, “I-I didn’t mean anything like that. I just meant you could come over, sit for a while, enjoy the air conditioning. Don’t get the wrong idea.”
As she explained, she kept sneaking glances at Cao Kun, clearly embarrassed.
Cao Kun chuckled. “Alright then, I’ll come sit for a bit. But won’t your boyfriend be mad if he finds out?”
Having spent two years in prison, the saying goes, “a sow outshines Diao Chan.” Cao Kun had been locked up for ten years; denying he thought about women was nonsense.
In fact, when he confronted Bai Jing and those three thugs last night, he almost joined them.
Now, with a beautiful woman inviting him, he naturally wouldn’t refuse.
“No, he won’t,” Li Tingting said quickly. “He doesn’t even know which hotel I’m staying at, so he won’t find out about us.”
Her face flushed even more after saying this.
Uh-oh, the more she spoke, the more obvious her intentions seemed.
Seeing this, Cao Kun smiled and said nothing more. He left the restaurant with Li Tingting and headed to her hotel.
...
At one in the morning.
In the hotel room, Cao Kun lit a cigarette, smoking as he dressed.
Li Tingting lay weakly on the bed and said, “Actually, my boyfriend is pretty good to me. He’s just too cowardly—not manly at all. If he were more like you, full of courage and masculinity, I’d love him to death, really.”
Cao Kun chuckled softly while getting dressed.
“You can’t look at things one-sidedly. You have to understand there are benefits to being cowardly and drawbacks to being brave.”
“At least cowardly people don’t usually get into trouble.”
“Besides, society is pretty safe these days. How many times in a lifetime do you really need to be brave?”
“So being a little cowardly isn’t bad. As long as he treats you well, that’s enough.”
Li Tingting thought for a moment, then burst out laughing.
“You’re something else—playing with someone’s girlfriend and still saying a good word for him.”
Cao Kun laughed heartily. “Well, I can’t just play with someone’s girlfriend without some decency. Alright, you get some rest. I’m leaving now.”

Seeing this, Li Tingting looked reluctant. “Hey, you’re really leaving? At this late hour, where are you going?”
Cao Kun waved his hand without answering and opened the door to leave.
Watching Cao Kun walk away, Li Tingting lingered in thought for a while before taking out her phone and removing a number from the blacklist.
No sooner had she done that than the phone rang.
Li Tingting pouted and answered.
An anxious male voice came through.
“Hey, Tingting, where are you?”
Li Tingting pouted. “You dummy, I’m obviously at the hotel sleeping. It’s one in the morning. You don’t think I’m still out wandering, do you?”
The man chuckled nervously. “So, you’re not mad anymore?”
“Not at all,” Li Tingting said coquettishly. “You’re really something. I blocked you, and you didn’t even think to borrow someone else’s phone to call me?”
“Heh heh...” The man laughed foolishly again.
Li Tingting pouted again and continued, “Hey, can you try standing up while you pedal your bike next time?”
“Huh?” The man was momentarily stunned. “What bike? Tingting, do you want to ride a bike?”
Li Tingting helplessly covered her forehead. “No, I mean... you know those guys who stand up and pedal hard on their bikes? That’s really manly and attractive.”
“Uh...” The man sounded innocent. “Tingting, are you saying you want to see me ride a bike?”
“I...” Li Tingting was speechless. “Who wants to see you ride a bike? I’m just telling you that your bike’s about to be worn out from all that pedaling. Anyway, go to sleep!”
After speaking, Li Tingting hung up in a huff.
On the other end, her boyfriend stared at the phone, completely bewildered.
His bike was about to be worn out? Impossible!
His bike had been safely kept at home, never lent out.
Could his parents have lent the bike to someone else while he was away?
And Li Tingting just happened to see that person violently pedaling his bike?
Yes! That must be it!
She must have seen that person standing up and pedaling hard, which is why she mentioned it.
Thinking this, he felt a warm glow in his heart.
Tingting was looking out for him.
Heh... what a virtuous and good wife!
