Chapter 19: The Pain That Tears the Heart Apart
Upon hearing Qin Mu’s cold interrogation, Jiang Xue wiped away the faint tears and looked innocent.
“What’s wrong, Brother Qin Mu? Isn’t it wonderful that someone donated a kidney to Chenchen? Why do you look so unhappy?”
Qin Mu pulled his arm away. “Tell me, who donated the kidney to Chenchen?”
Qin Mu’s indifferent expression caused Jiang Xue to break down in tears. “What’s the matter? What did I do wrong? I just want my son to grow up healthy and happy. Why are you so harsh with me?”
“I want an answer!” Qin Mu lost his patience, his gaze sharp as he stared at Jiang Xue, his hand trembling.
A vague pain gnawed at his heart. He feared that the little girl who had died was Jiang Li’s daughter.
No matter whose child she was, the child was innocent.
The key question now was: where was Jiang Li? She must be devastated.
Would she be unable to bear it?
And did Chen Shaojie really dare to do such a thing?
That was a life!
Did Chen Shaojie not want to live anymore?
Was Yoyo really not his daughter?
The more he thought about it, the more anxious he became; he even suspected Jiang Xue was involved.
Jiang Xue’s tearful face wet her collar. “Brother Qin Mu, what exactly did I do wrong for you to be so fierce with me? How would I know who donated the kidney? All I know is that the girl’s father signed the consent form, took ten million yuan, and left.
Moreover, the little girl had a heart condition that he completely ignored. He even donated her body to a research center and got a one million yuan bonus. After that, I don’t know anything else.”
Qin Mu looked at Jiang Xue’s tear-streaked face with growing irritation. “Alright, I’m not blaming you. Do you know who the girl’s father is?”
Upon hearing Qin Mu’s question, Jiang Xue quickly took out her phone and showed him the edited surveillance footage.
“Brother Qin Mu, it’s him. His name seems to be Chen Shaojie. He signed the papers, and before I even arrived at the hospital, he had taken the two children to the operating room.
I really have the call records. He called me just after five in the morning, urging me to get to the hospital quickly. I’m not lying—the video is proof.”
Qin Mu’s heart pounded fiercely; Yoyo’s adorable face lingered in his mind, refusing to fade.
---
“Handsome uncle, Yoyo really likes you. Can you be Yoyo’s dad?”
The sweet smile, the delicate doll-like features, carried a sprite-like charm.
But she was dead.
And she died for Jin Chen, for his son, donating her kidney.
Qin Mu staggered back several steps, shocked as he tried to process the news.
“Chen Shaojie took her from me, and yet he killed her? Jiang Li will never forgive me. Would she be unable to bear it?”
Qin Mu immediately called the villa’s bodyguards, but they still hadn’t found her.
“President Qin, Ms. Jiang Li spent all night digging a hole in the corner of the wall and escaped. We really didn’t expect it…”
“That’s enough! A bunch of useless people! I told you to watch her, and she ran away without you even noticing. What use are you? Go find her at once. If you can’t find her, I’ll personally send two of you to dig coal in the Black Country!”
“Yes, President Qin. But someone saw Miss Jiang go barefoot to the hospital, her hands covered in blood.”
Qin Mu hung up and turned to Jiang Xue. “Did you see Jiang Li at the hospital? Who took the little girl’s body? What really happened? Tell me.”
“I…” Jiang Xue clenched her fists in anger. He still cared so much about that woman, Jiang Li. Why?
Why had her years by his side failed to warm his heart?
Why, despite bearing his children, could she not earn a century’s wedding celebration from him?
Endless grievances, jealousy, and hatred drove Jiang Xue; she found a strange pleasure in revenge.
“I saw Jiang Li. She came to the hospital to stop her husband’s actions but was too late.
Her daughter’s surgery failed, and she died. Jiang Li couldn’t stop Chen Shaojie from donating the body. She was so heartbroken she seemed to have gone to the rooftop.”
Jiang Xue’s words made Qin Mu’s eyes widen in disbelief. “You clearly knew Chen Shaojie was Jiang Li’s husband. You knew the child was hers. So why did you let her donate the kidney?”
Qin Mu’s grip on Jiang Xue’s shoulder was painful. He hated seeing her go crazy over that woman.
Jiang Xue shoved him away in frustration, a hint of collapse in her voice. “I’m not that noble. I only want to save my son. No matter who donates the kidney, I’m willing. I even paid ten million for it—I’ve done all I can.
I have no control over anything else. I just want my child to live. I’m not wrong.”
---
Facing Jiang Xue’s selfishness, Qin Mu could not blame her—after all, curing his son was his wish as well.
He turned and ran toward the rooftop.
Silently, he prayed, “Jiang Li, please, don’t be hurt. Please, don’t be hurt.”
His hurried footsteps echoed as his mind recalled the first time he met Jiang Li.
She was like a breath of fresh air under a clear sky.
She excelled academically, held firm values, and was the exact opposite of his wild, unruly nature.
After that night in the hotel when she lost her virginity, he too became silent, reserved, and refined.
They once said everything would change. A middle-class family and a noble house were worlds apart, destined never to be united.
He did not believe it. He thought he was the nobility, and his woman needed no such status.
But the difference was not about nobility—it was that they could never truly be together.
He tried to confine Jiang Li by his side, even as a lover. But with each heartbreak and punishment, he forgot he was the first to betray, even if she was forced into it.
Qin Mu regretted it; he clearly loved Jiang Li, but this woman…
A crisp autumn breeze blew across his face. There was no sign of Jiang Li on the rooftop.
The tall buildings nearby, the glittering lights—still no trace of her.
Yet she was already married. Since the day she escaped, she never intended to return to him.
The pain was like a dull knife cutting flesh.
Qin Mu clutched his chest in panic just as his phone rang.
“President Qin, we’ve found out. It really is Chen Shaojie. He’s now in Jiang City, working as sales manager at Jiang Group—a parachuted CEO personally recruited by Jiang Jintao.”
Hearing Li Fei’s words, Qin Mu clenched his fists tightly. “That vicious man will be fired sooner or later. Have you found any trace of Yoyo? Where did he take her? You must find her for me.”
After a moment’s hesitation, Li Fei spoke with a trace of sorrow, “Sorry, President Qin. The hospital issued a death certificate, and the one million yuan donation bonus to the organ donation agency is real. So, I’m afraid that little Yoyo is truly gone.”
