Seeing Jiang Li about to leave, Qin Mu rose to his feet. “I’ll see you out!”

Jiang Li stopped without turning around. “Do you think you’re worthy?”

Qin Mu took a deep breath. “Can’t we sit down and talk this through?”

Holding back her tears, Jiang Li said, “There’s nothing to talk about. Qin Mu, as long as my daughter hasn’t been found, you’d better be prepared for us to die together!”

Still seething with anger, Jiang Li walked away and continued, “If you want to work for me, you’ll do as I say. You’ll be on call twenty-four hours a day!”

A taxi was waiting outside. Jiang Li got in and left at once.

Qin Mu drew a deep breath and picked up the documents.

He muttered to himself, “Youyou isn’t my daughter. Jiang Li, why?”

But Jiang Li, who was already far away, could give him no answer.

When she arrived at the villa and confirmed that Qin Mu had not followed her, Jiang Li finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Seeing his granddaughter arrive, Old Master Jiang handed her an invitation to an auction.

“Go out and enjoy yourself more! Buy whatever you want. Your grandfather will pay!”

Jiang Li accepted the invitation, her heart tightening painfully. Still, there were some things she had to face.

Her mother, Xie Yun, had come as well. “Xiao Li, I’ve invited the teacher who once taught me to come tomorrow morning. She’s very strict, but she can teach you a great deal about how to conduct yourself and deal with others. I hope you’ll listen carefully for those two hours tomorrow morning.”

“Mm, I will, Mom. By the way, where’s that little fellow? Why haven’t I seen him?”

“I’m right here! Pretty Mommy, I was very good today. I even finished my homework and studied computer programming. I’m amazing!”

Seeing little Jin Chen run toward her, a faint smile finally appeared on Jiang Li’s face. After days of grief, she finally showed some emotion.

“You’re wonderful. No strenuous exercise for the next few days, or your wound might reopen.”

“Mm-hmm. Thank you, Pretty Mommy. Chenchen understands.”

Looking at the little boy before her, Jiang Li admitted that she had grown very fond of him.

The paternity test report should have arrived by now as well. Just as Jiang Li was waiting for Assistant Lin to bring her the answer, Jiang Xue called.

“Cousin Jiang Li, where have you hidden my son? As a mother, you should understand how a mother feels when she wants to see her child. I’m asking you to return Chenchen to me. Do you hear me?”

Jiang Li let out a cold laugh. If Chenchen had not told her how Jiang Xue usually treated him, she might never have known.

Whenever she thought of Jiang Xue’s hypocritical face, she could not help but burn with anger.

“Then, Sister Jiang Xue, have you found Youyou yet? As long as you return my daughter to me, I can send your son back to you at any time.”

“Jiang Li, are you crazy? Youyou’s heart has already been found. Do you really think she could still be alive? I’m warning you—if anything happens to my son, I will never let you off!”

“Is that so? I’m rather curious to see exactly how you intend not to let me off. Watching you put on an act is exhausting enough as it is!”

Hearing Jiang Li’s words, Jiang Xue was about to retaliate when she saw Qin Mu standing behind her in the mirror.

Her instinct for acting was immediately roused. In a pitiful, sobbing voice, she said, “Sister Jiang Li, I know you hate me. You hate me for taking Brother Qin Mu away from you. But I only gave birth to Chenchen to save him. The child is innocent. Whatever anger you have, take it out on me. Please, don’t hurt the child!”

Hearing Jiang Xue suddenly change her attitude, Jiang Li knew she was courting disaster again.

“Fine. I am angry. Every day Youyou remains missing, I wish you and Qin Mu were both dead. So stop acting, Jiang Xue. Use this time to ask Chen Shaojie where you sent Youyou.”

Qin Mu walked in and stopped behind Jiang Xue.

Jiang Xue wiped away her barely visible tears and sobbed, “Sister Jiang Li, I’ll kneel down to you. Please, please return my son to me. I can’t sleep when I can’t see Chenchen. I’m begging you!”

Then she actually knelt down, and Jiang Li hung up the phone.

Jiang Xue covered her face, looking utterly devastated. Qin Mu saw her.

He hurried over and helped her to her feet. After all, Chenchen was Jiang Xue’s own child. Seeing her overcome with grief and longing for her son, how could he remain unmoved?

“Don’t be so upset. I’ve had people investigate. Chenchen is safe for now, so you can rest assured.”

Hearing Qin Mu’s voice, Jiang Xue pretended not to know he was there. She turned around. “Brother Qin Mu, why are you here? Is what you said true? Is Chenchen really safe? If so, why won’t Sister Jiang Li return him to me?”

After saying this, she looked at Qin Mu. He sat there in silence, his face cold and expressionless.

Qin Mu lit a cigarette. Swirling smoke blurred his handsome features and the complicated emotions in his eyes.

Jiang Xue, however, was also curious. Jiang Li had come from Cloud City to River City—why did it seem as though so many people were helping her?

How had she still not managed to find out where Jiang Li was staying?

Youyou had gone missing from a hospital in Cloud City. Logically, Jiang Li should have been searching there. Why had she come to River City?

Could she know something?

After all, Youyou’s heart had also been found at the hospital in Cloud City. There was no reason for Jiang Li to remain in River City.

Jiang Xue could not make sense of it. Then Qin Mu said, “I happened to be handling some matters at the River City branch. Your uncle said you were devastated over what happened to your son, so I came to see you.”

Qin Mu had always been swift and decisive, resolving matters quickly, ruthlessly, and accurately. He was sparing with words and rarely said more than a few sentences a day.

Yet ever since Jiang Li had reappeared, he seemed to be speaking more and more.

But Jiang Xue had to marry Qin Mu as soon as possible. Otherwise, more trouble would arise, especially since that bastard child seemed even closer to Jiang Li.

With that thought, Jiang Xue began sobbing. “Brother Qin Mu, I’ve been with you for so many years, and our son is almost four years old. Why can’t you take pity on me and give me a proper status?”

Qin Mu frowned. “What exactly are you trying to say? You should know that our son has been tormented by illness all these years. I don’t want anything to distract him.”

“You don’t want our son to be distracted? You simply don’t want me near you. Brother Qin Mu, I know you still can’t let go of my cousin, but I’m a woman too. Even our son refuses to acknowledge me, and the servants refuse to respect me. Do you think I’m not hurt by that?”

Jiang Xue’s calculated advance and retreat left Qin Mu speechless. It was true—over the years, Jiang Xue had loved him wholeheartedly. She had even constantly dreamed of becoming the mistress of the Qin Corporation, to the point that she had neglected disciplining their son.

When he thought about it, he truly did owe Jiang Xue, even though she had been the mastermind behind his father’s car accident.

But he could not yet break completely with her. There was still one matter he needed to investigate: the task entrusted to him by his mentor, Old Master Jiang.

Qin Mu took out an invitation and said in a deep voice, “I’ll take you to the auction tomorrow and buy you some jewelry.”

Jiang Xue took the invitation, her face filled with shock.

After all, invitations to River City’s most prestigious auction were issued only to people whose net worth exceeded three hundred million.

Qin Mu had two invitations and was willing to take her with him. This was nothing less than a public declaration that she was the lady of the house.
