Chapter 149 Don't be afraid, your Daddy Milk is here to protect you
"First, let's arrange the guard's duty. Even if the sky falls tonight, protect me. I still have a bottle of poison on hand and don't want to use it just yet. Number 6 is the protected safe target for the first night, so we'll secure him for one round."
Chen Fan thought about it, feeling something was amiss. He had clearly self-guarded the previous night, so how did he become the safe target? However, seeing as the other party was forcefully pulling him out of the danger zone, he decided to follow Number 12's instructions and provide protection for the night.
After saving Chen Fan, the Holy Paladin Number 12 turned his attention to Number 11. "This guy's speech during the investigation phase was so lazy, and he didn't mention a single person in the early position during the defense phase? Did you all just believe him because he claimed to be a plain villager? This kind of gameplay is completely intolerable. I hate winning lazy wolves the most, and he has to go this round."
The Holy Paladin then issued a threat: "If I see anyone not voting for him during the tally, you can come and collect a bottle of poison from me tonight. If anyone has the guts to fake-claim Witch against me, feel free to single-vote me directly and save me the trouble of hunting you down. Actions speak louder than words—the Witch is taking charge and demanding Number 11's elimination."
"Seriously, I used to get utterly humiliated by Spitfire in PKs all the time, and now I finally have a chance for revenge," the Holy Paladin remarked at the end, revealing the true motive.
"Pfft—" Chen Fan twitched the corner of his mouth, not daring to laugh out loud.
"Well, at least it's not a Ranger torturing you, I'm so scared. Number 11's speech really was lazy, so if no one else in the late position claims Witch, I can accept voting out Number 11," Ranger Number 1, directly submitting to the dark forces.
Soul Bender Number 2 also caved, saying, "Proof that choosing the right class lets you coast to the end. Let's just go with 11 then."
Exorcist Number 3 was stunned by this sudden shift in the atmosphere and sighed, "All four divine roles are out. This game is going to be tough. Let's listen to the Sheriff."
"Let's listen to the Sheriff," Judoka Number 4 chimed in with minimal effort.
Sheriff Number 5 originally wanted to put up a stubborn resistance, but staring into Number 11's firm and resolute gaze, he let out a soft sigh and said, "Who asked you to be a Spitfire? Your defense was terrible, and the Witch stepped out and stepped on you. I guess I'll have to hand you a one-way ticket."
Chen Fan, who spoke first in the opening position, was thus forcefully protected from being a focal suspect by the Witch-Priest Number 12. Number 11's little boat was ultimately doomed to sail away.
Spitfire Number 11 protested indignantly, "I've been wronged! I really am just a plain villager. What was the point of me joining the police investigation phase if not for fun? Number 8 is a confirmed good guy, and Number 10 recognized the Guard, so isn't it completely natural for me to suspect Number 6? You guys are pushing the wrong person out."
Chen Fan chuckled inwardly. Whoever died didn't matter; at least he had bought himself another round of life.
"Guard Number 12."
Chen Fan didn't bother trying to outsmart the werewolves. He just followed the Priest's lead and smoothly executed a full set of Rapid Dragon Swordsmanship.
"Last night was a peaceful night. Will the strongest warrior please choose the speaking order?" Seria announced the night's information with a pursed smile.
"Whoa, the Priest is mighty," Chen Fan cheered internally.
"Number 6... wait, no, let's start from Number 4 instead."
Asura Sheriff Number 5 counted the positions. The current situation was entirely under the Witch's control, so it was better to have the Witch speak in an early position to provide information.
"Holding poison in my hand makes me nervous. I'll vote for whoever the Witch wants out. Pass," Judoka Number 4 slacked off again.
Exorcist Number 3 was driving himself crazy and suggested, "Two toy bears left on the field are completely useless. Why not vote one out and poison the other for a pure 50-50 guess?"
Soul Bender Number 2 had zero backbone and meekly replied, "I've hopped onto the Witch's express train, so I'm not getting off."
"The toy bear layout is no fun at all, I want both bears out too," Ranger Number 1 said listlessly, terrified of offending the high-tier Witch player in the late position.
"Wolf pack, any surprises? Any plot twists? Did you think I was out of antidotes?" Holy Paladin Number 12 burst into laughter. "You guys thought Number 3 was the Guard, so you went to bite him at night, only to be saved by me. Fools, aren't you?"
Chen Fan understood the underlying meaning. The Holy Paladin-Priest had deliberately claimed to be his safe target yesterday and instructed the Guard to explicitly protect someone, allowing the werewolves to safely hunt for the Guard among the outer positions. Meanwhile, Number 3 was the only one in the investigation phase to claim villager status or higher, making him the most likely target.
The reason they didn't bite Chen Fan was to keep him alive to cast suspicion on him during the day, buying the wolf pack another round.
What a pity the wolf pack's strategy was muddled by the Witch. Chen Fan had self-guarded to save his life on the first night, and the Witch reported the correct safe target while concealing the fact that the antidote was still available. This tricked the werewolves into placing their trust elsewhere, further narrowing down the suspect pool.
"Let me think... Right now, 5, 6, 7, 8, and myself make five good guys. 9 and 10 are confirmed wolves. Let's get rid of 9 today. You don't need to act anymore; you can't win the tie-vote anyway. Just self-destruct." Holy Paladin Number 12 was brimming with confidence, performing his solo act so successfully that his ego was about to burst.
Street Fighter Number 9 furrowed his brow. Having his strategy seen through was indeed a tricky situation. He cast a glance at the consecutive player numbers across the table, then suddenly let go of his tension, regained his confidence, and said, "Don't celebrate too early. It's not decided who wins yet. Self-destruct."
Returning to his lodging, Chen Fan felt quite good about himself. Not only had his suspicion been cleared, but the overall situation had also become much clearer. Good guys had a massive advantage. Just as he thought about self-guarding again, he realized something was wrong.
"How many plain villagers are left now..."
Chen Fan counted on his fingers. Currently, all four divine roles were still alive, and the number of surviving villagers was unknown, likely three or four. Mechanic Number 8 was a confirmed villager, and Exorcist Number 3, the safe target, was also overwhelmingly likely to be a confirmed villager.
"Should I guard a villager or myself..."
Chen Fan hesitated. If Number 11 really had been a slacking plain villager who got voted out, there were still two deep-water wolves hidden on the field. Number 7, that toy bear, was completely useless other than absorbing a single bite.
"Let's take a gamble and guard 8." Growing bold, Chen Fan abandoned the idea of self-guarding.
Having survived two peaceful nights, the game finally welcomed a double-death morning.
"Last night, Number 3 and Number 10 died."
Chen Fan couldn't help feeling a tinge of disappointment. The target hadn't been protected; the legendary 50-50 guess had claimed its victims.
"It's a pure elimination game now. Damn it, Number 4 speaks first." Asura Number 5 complained. At this point, the whole room would just listen to how players 1, 2, and 4 bluffed; the others no longer needed to defend themselves.
"There might be one wolf left, or maybe two. If someone gets voted out today and the game doesn't end, the Guard should protect a villager at night. All four divine roles are still present, so there's no need to protect a god."
Judoka Number 4 rubbed his palms, finally deciding to put in some effort. He said seriously, "The three of us were very lazy in the first two rounds. Number 1's speech in the investigation phase was acceptable. Personally, I think Number 2 is more deserving of elimination; his words always lack any substance."
Soul Bender Number 2 was instantly displeased and retorted, "Didn't you, Judoka, just follow the crowd earlier? With the Witch's words hanging over us, would a plain villager dare to squeak after a couple of threats? This Number 4 comes right out of the gate and attacks me fiercely—he must be the last wolf. Let's vote him out this round."
Ranger Number 1, who had just been on the life-or-death PK stage, was dragged off to the sidelines to watch the show and much on melon seeds. He couldn't have been happier. "These two guys are drawing opposing lines and have completely excluded me. At least I'm safe from being voted out this round. Let's see either 2 or 4 go first. If the game doesn't end, we can have another PK tomorrow morning."
Holy Paladin Number 12 had a massive headache. The ego he had inflated just a moment ago had been completely deflated, leaving him full of pent-up frustration. With no other choice, he complained about Bear Number 7: "In a pure elimination game with zero clues, what use are you, Number 7, other than causing chaos? I'm almost tempted to vote your toy bear out this round just to see the night's kill pattern..."
"No, no, what if they bite a god at night and we still know nothing by day? No matter what, we have to vote someone out. You guys figure it out, this is so hard..." Holy Paladin Number 12 thought for a moment and ultimately abandoned his own plan.
"As a spectator, I'm out of melon seeds. Vote out either 2 or 4, I don't care, I have no idea," Mechanic Number 8 coasted safely through the entire process.
"I inspected them both as good guys, and I'm helpless," Number 7 shrugged. "The Guard and the Sheriff can figure out whether 2 or 4 goes. I'll just contentedly play my role as a toy bear."
Chen Fan was momentarily speechless. This hound of a bear either made things harder or was completely useless, failing to contribute anything at all.
Chen Fan exchanged glances with the Sheriff. Their eyes met in mutual bewilderment—neither of them could find any flaws in the suspects' speeches. They were so brief they might as well have said nothing at all, leaving them to rely entirely on gut feeling.
It was hard. Truly a difficult choice to make.
