Chapter 102: Chen Fan's Decision
The hook still needed to be played, and Chen Fan decided to have a witch jump into the hook. This was standard practice for demons, since they never fall at night and therefore do not fear the witch’s poison.
Chen Fan pressed his thick bear paw onto the table. “I’m holding the Witch card. Yesterday, Number 11 fell, and I brought her back. Personally, I lean toward siding with Number 12. This round, I’ll focus on Number 1’s speech. I think Number 1 is very likely a wolf, no doubt about it.”
The two teammates in the later positions had yet to speak, and Chen Fan hinted, “This round, we should start with Number 1. There’s nothing more to say. If you can’t distinguish between 12 and 7, we can take it slow.”
Chen Fan was gambling—gambling on whether the Witch would use her potion to save someone. If the Witch withheld her potion last night and the person hid away, then following up would be pointless for Chen Fan.
Number 5, Kappa Duck, understood Chen Fan’s coded message, made a routine water speech, briefly commented on the previous players, and then quietly slipped away.
Luckily, the formation wasn’t completely collapsing yet. Chen Fan assessed the situation—just a slight disadvantage, but there was hope for a comeback.
Number 1, Wu Qiqi, blushed deeply, flustered and tongue-tied. “I… I’m a civilian, really—a cute raccoon civilian, not a wolf! Number 12 is a fake seer, I don’t believe him.”
Well… with speech skills like that, it was almost certain she’d be eliminated. Chen Fan, below the police line, had no intention of saving her any longer and decided to sell completely.
“Number 12 is elected sheriff. Ga~ Last night, peaceful night, ga~”
Chen Fan breathed a sigh of relief, carefully observing the voting patterns. With no wolves below the sheriff, Number 8 voted for Number 7, while Li Peijun received three consecutive good-guy votes from Numbers 2, 3, and 4.
When Li Peijun slowly decided on the speaking order, three minutes slipped by.
Number 1, Wu Qiqi, defended herself: “I… I really… am not a wolf. Don’t you all think Number 12’s team is incredibly strong? From 11 upwards, everyone supports Number 12. The three good people below the sheriff all voted for Number 12. Number 7 only got one vote—don’t you find that strange?”
Number 2 responded, “It is strange. The wolf team must all be playing the hook. Also, Number 1, how do you know we’re three good people in a row? Even the seer doesn’t know that unless you’re a wolf.”
Number 3 chimed in, “Exactly! I’m holding a civilian card, and I’m nervous just looking at the voting pattern. How can you be so sure the three of us are good people unless you’re a wolf, right?”
Number 4 added, “Number 1 just helped us identify three wolf pits in one go. Tomorrow, the seer can just check the outer positions; I think two wolves are hiding among Numbers 8, 9, and 10.”
“Enough, enough, stop talking!” Wu Qiqi puffed her cheeks and buried her head on the table.
“Alright, ga~ Night falls, please close your eyes, ga~”
Outside, the world was still starkly bright—a slight difference from the usual day-night synchronization in other scenarios.
“Um… what should I do now?” Chen Fan was at a loss. There were two overt wolves playing aggressively, and only Number 5, Kappa Duck, had hidden away. Tonight, the guard would almost certainly protect the seer, so Chen Fan had to gamble that the seer would check the wrong person.
Most of the good people on the field were aligned correctly, leaving very little room for wolf maneuvering. Chen Fan recalled some details: Why hadn’t the Witch jumped? The speeches stopped abruptly at Number 5 yesterday, with little information. So, the Witch could only be among the later players.
Kappa Duck and Cold Bunny Baby were also under tremendous pressure; the wolf team couldn’t agree on a target.
“Wait, during voting, Number 8 voted for Number 7.”
Chen Fan suddenly noticed this. The opponent hadn’t spoken last round, so he could only deduce their intent from the voting pattern.
“Knife Number 8. Number 8 is probably the Witch.”
Chen Fan signaled to his teammates—they had to gamble again. Not only did the seer need to check the wrong person, but Chen Fan himself had to knife the correct role for the situation to turn.
Once the teammates confirmed, Chen Fan individually checked Number 2’s identity—the result showed a special role.
“Daybreak, ga~ Last night, Numbers 8 and 9 died, ga~”
“Hmm? Looks like the Witch poisoned the wrong person.” Seeing that none of his own had died, Chen Fan’s face revealed a barely perceptible smile.
Number 12, Sloth, pointed to Number 2 to speak first, and the whole process took nearly two minutes…
Number 2 hesitated, then spoke confidently, “Me first? Looks like you didn’t check my identity last night. Fine, I’ll jump as the Hunter. I think this game is already quite favorable. Let’s eliminate Number 7 first, and tonight you, as sheriff, check Number 10. After confirming identities, we’ll hand over the cards tomorrow morning.”
Numbers 3 and 4 clung tightly to Number 2’s Hunter claim, forcefully pushing for Number 7’s elimination.
It was Kappa Duck’s turn—Number 5, adhering to the creed of the deep-water wolf, continued to paddle his little boat, neither taking sides nor voting, and rambled on with a long, meaningless speech.
The most awkward of all was Chen Fan…
As for the Witch, she had to acknowledge the corpse. As for who was poisoned, Chen Fan had no other option—he could only insist that Number 8 was poisoned.
“Yesterday, I saw Number 8 voted for Number 7, so I poisoned her last night. You all say to eliminate Number 7, but I’ll listen to the speeches again before deciding. I think Numbers 3 and 4 are blindly following along—they could be hook wolves.”
Chen Fan performed earnestly. His hand was already stretched out; whether he could salvage the situation depended on Number 7’s fate.
Number 7, Cold Bunny, smirked coldly, “No need to hide anymore. You, Number 6, are the demon. On the first night, I checked Number 8, who was golden water and now dead. Last night, I checked you, and you, Number 6, are the demon pretending to be the Witch and siding with Number 12. If there’s a real Witch among the later positions, please step forward and confront Number 6. Let's eliminate Number 6 this round, thank you.”
Cold Bunny paused and added, “Also, there’s definitely a wolf among 3, 4, and 5. Right now, in my eyes, Numbers 6 and 12 are confirmed wolves. I don't know what Number 9's role was, but Numbers 10 and 11 gave good speeches above the sheriff line and could make it to the finals. This round, we must eliminate my identified wolf, Number 6.”
Number 10 pondered Number 7’s words, feeling that things were progressing too smoothly, and overturned her previous assumptions. “If we believe Number 7 is the seer, then her wolf pits are correct. Number 6 could indeed be the demon. But if we follow Number 12’s template from before, who would be the demon?”
Thinking it over, this pink Nostalgic Bear furrowed her brow, sensing complications.
She turned her gaze to Number 11. “The demon shouldn’t be so timid. The most likely demon on the field, apart from Number 6, is you, Number 11. You were the first on the sheriff line to point out Number 12’s sign language and led us to believe he was the true seer. I want to pay close attention to your speech next.”
Number 11, Totoro, quivered his ears in anger. “I simply repeated what I knew. I’m not the Witch. If we follow Number 7’s seer logic, then there’s no Witch left on the field. If Number 9 was the Witch, she could only have been knifed. And if Number 9 was the Witch, she would definitely have poisoned one of 2, 3, or 4, since they sided with Number 6, the fake Witch. There’s no way she’d poison Number 8.”
“Assuming Number 8 was the Witch and got knifed, and Number 9 was poisoned, it still doesn’t make sense. No matter whether 8 or 9 was the Witch, the one who got poisoned should be one of 2, 3, or 4. So Number 6 can only be genuine. We should eliminate Number 7 this round.”
Totoro went in circles and finally ended up back where he started. Having run out of things to say, he simply stuck out his tongue and muttered incoherently.
It was now the sheriff’s turn. This round, Li Peijun’s identity check was crucial—if another wolf was identified, a comeback would be all but impossible.
Li Peijun’s lazy hand had just returned, and he began gesturing slowly, his words as economical as possible.
“Hmph~ This is getting interesting.”
