“You’re in this class too? Mind if I sit next to you?”

Chen Fan had only just finished his IV drip and still felt somewhat listless. He slowly turned his head and recognized Yu Miao. They had not seen each other for two days, yet her presence seemed to have risen several notches; she was drawing ever closer to the air of a true beauty.

No wonder people said that scoundrels were catalysts of charm. It seemed there was some truth in that after all.

“No one’s sitting there. If you want to sit, go ahead,” Chen Fan answered weakly, lifting the bag that occupied the seat and moving it aside.

Yu Miao grinned and, without standing on ceremony, sat down with ease. “Why do you look so dead? Did you quarrel with your girlfriend?”

Chen Fan rubbed his temples. He still had not fully recovered from the sluggishness, and he squinted as he said, “What quarrel? I don’t even have a girlfriend. The girl you saw in the library last time is just my classmate.”

Yu Miao said instinctively, “Not just any classmate, right? It looked like there was something unusual between you.”

Chen Fan twirled his pen and admitted reluctantly, “Your girls’ intuition really is something. I met her because of a misunderstanding before. Back then, my former roommate was still trying to pursue her.”

Female curiosity was like Pandora’s box; once opened, it could not be contained. Chen Fan told Yu Miao the whole story from beginning to end, and as she listened, she nodded from time to time.

“I didn’t expect you to be quite the righteous type.”

Chen Fan shrugged and turned his gaze back to the blackboard. “I’d rather have a little less of that kind of righteousness. Sometimes you end up losing too much, and it isn’t worth it. Better to be a refined egoist.”

“My intuition tells me you wouldn’t. What you really worry about is that your ability isn’t enough to support your sense of justice, so you instinctively protect yourself,” Yu Miao said with a smile, as if she had seen right through him.

Chen Fan could not be bothered to argue. He tilted his body to the other side. “You girls really are a frightening species.”

“That’s only how they act toward people they’re interested in. Most of the time, we’re just gentle, innocent, harmless creatures,” Yu Miao corrected him.

The lecture, read straight from the script, was dull beyond measure. Chen Fan stared at the handout on the slides, scribbled random marks over the key points in his textbook, and let his pen hang in the air as his thoughts drifted away again.

“Does that guy know everything now? Is he still locked up?”

Yu Miao stopped writing. Her gaze remained fixed ahead. “He probably doesn’t know yet. He must think I’ll still follow him like I always did, that no matter what mistake he made, I’d forgive him without reservation. Too bad for him; he miscalculated this time. I’m guessing he’s going to go crazy for a while.”

Chen Fan warned her, “I don’t think he’ll let this go easily. You’d better be careful for the time being. If you can cut ties cleanly, that would naturally be best. But if he really clings on and won’t let go, that’ll be a huge headache.”

Yu Miao was unafraid. “I’ve been with him since our first year of high school. Back then, he was the one pursuing me. I used to be shallow and infatuated; when such a handsome guy took the initiative to chase me, I fell for him at once. Since then, there were at least a dozen times he cheated on me, and every single time I was the one begging him, in low and humble tones, to get back together. I’ve had enough.”

Chen Fan was secretly startled. He had not expected that the virtue of a scapegoat could actually save a girl who had gone astray. What a meritorious deed. It had not been in vain that he had carried several pots for her that day.

“Since everything’s already been made clear, if it really comes to that, we can just tear things apart and be done with it. What’s the big deal? Let his little mistresses keep him company for the rest of his life. I’m going to start my own life over.”

Chen Fan covered his face, remembering the pain from a few days ago. Was this still the same girl who had slapped him for the sake of a scoundrel?

“By the way, can you really call down lightning?”

The topic had jumped a little too far. Chen Fan first froze, nearly nodded, then shook his head repeatedly. “Don’t believe those videos. They’re fake. It’s all post-production effects.”

Yu Miao said half-believingly, “Oh, so even you get a chance to become famous.”

“It was that streamer who wanted attention. She just happened to find me, an ordinary passerby, to make a friendly guest appearance. I didn’t expect it to blow up by accident,” Chen Fan made up a lie casually, then threw in some hazy theories to barely smooth it over.

“Today I saw a lot of people greeting you on the way. I didn’t expect you to have such good popularity.”

Chen Fan thought for a moment. He could hardly tell her it was because of the mixed-blood card. Helplessly, he lied again. “Seeing the big star from the video in person, of course the crowd gets curious. But most of them hadn’t even seen my face before. They were all just asking whether I could really summon lightning.”

“That makes sense.” Yu Miao studied the boy before her once more, and his all-seeing look made Chen Fan feel extremely uncomfortable.

“From now on, keep a low profile. Don’t mention that lightning video again. I really don’t want to be famous.”

Yu Miao curled her lip. “Haha, there’s no need to stress it. What should be forgotten will naturally be forgotten. What someone doesn’t want to forget, they’ll remember for life.”

Chen Fan also examined Yu Miao from top to bottom. The change in her before and after truly was rather dramatic. Curious, he asked, “How did you manage such a huge transformation in just a few days?”

Yu Miao looked surprised. She pointed at herself and then let out a light laugh. “Haven’t you heard of the eighteen transformations of a woman’s makeup? I used to never bother with myself. But after I came to my senses, I felt that girls should think more about themselves, so I tried different styles. It’s had some effect so far.”

Chen Fan widened his eyes. With his own eyesight, he really could not tell whether a girl was wearing makeup. At his current level, he could only recognize lipstick.

“Then I guess if you put on heavy makeup later, he won’t even recognize you.”

“But his lustful heart for beauties has never gone out. Maybe if I walk down the street, he’ll even swagger over and greet me as if nothing happened,” Yu Miao imagined the scene and actually seemed a little pleased with herself.

“You didn’t happen to draw up a whole revenge plan, did you?” Chen Fan suddenly felt a chill.

Yu Miao shook her head. “I’m not that bored. He’s just a rotten person. In the future, whoever he wants to fool around with, he can fool around with. I’m not playing along with him anymore, and he’d better not come bothering me either.”

Chen Fan let out a breath of relief. It seemed the woman still retained her sanity.

“Oh, right. Is that game, Werewolf, fun?”

Chen Fan did not know why Yu Miao was asking about that, but he still answered, “Werewolf is a game of speech and logic. It’s different from ordinary lighthearted board games. Its distinctive style has won the favor of many players. Our school even has a dedicated Werewolf club.”

Chen Fan exhaled, feeling that in the future he could probably make a competent salesman.

“Using your brain a bit is good too. When you have time, come play sometime. I saw my roommates playing, so I got curious,” Yu Miao added. Chen Fan did not take it to heart.

The bell rang for the end of class, and the old professor packed up his teaching materials, rapping them twice against the podium before tucking them firmly under his arm.

“Students, that is all for today. Remember to finish your homework next time.”

Only then did Chen Fan come back to himself. “Hm? Homework? What homework?”
