The clock hands silently slipped past midnight, and the calendar on the phone flipped to a brand-new day.

It was August sixteenth—Mid-Autumn Festival had passed. Unlike usual, no light burst forth from the card.

In fact, no light would ever appear again.

Chen Fan hadn’t fallen asleep yet. It wasn’t because he was troubled by the card or overwhelmed by the burdens weighing on him.

No, it was simply because the day had been unbearably hot—so hot that life itself became unmanageable...

“That’s odd. Didn’t you say there would be a New Moon event? It’s already August sixteenth, yet there’s no sign of anything,” Chen Fan said, turning over in the dark to meet the Elder Card’s gaze.

From a corner came a few muffled sounds. “The New Moon event only triggers when the moon is full, not on the fifteenth. Haven’t you heard the saying, ‘The moon on the fifteenth night is even fuller on the sixteenth’? Don’t worry, it should happen in the next couple of days.”

“All the cards have run out. There are no new cards left to fuse. So what’s my identity today?” Chen Fan lowered his voice, not wanting to disturb his roommates.

The Elder spoke slowly: “The choice is in your hands. You can decide your identity each day. That’s one of the few benefits left now.”

“That doesn’t sound too bad. There can’t be a catch, right?” Chen Fan was suspicious, reluctant to celebrate too soon.

The Elder answered softly, “Rest assured, there’s no trap. The rules remain the same: you can only choose once a day. Each time you successfully endure a New Moon event, the cooldown on your identity shortens by one hour. Once you’ve conquered all 24 New Moon events, you will become a true master.”

“Oh, that’s a relief. One New Moon event per month, so in two years, I’ll be done.” Chen Fan exhaled, then suddenly noticed something odd. “Why ‘endure’? Could it be that...”

“The timing of New Moon events is unpredictable. If a debuff appears just as it triggers...” The Elder left the sentence hanging.

Chen Fan sneered, “I knew it wouldn’t be that easy. Are there any other precautions about the New Moon events? Tell me everything now—I don’t want to run into a dead end halfway.”

“There are three types of New Moon events: Crescent Moon, Full Moon, and Rotating Moon. They differ primarily in their active periods. Crescent Moon effects delay activation until sometime after the full moon; Full Moon events only take effect during the full moon; Rotating Moon events last for an entire cycle.”

The Elder paused, then continued, “Each New Moon event has its own unique effects. Werewolf cards fall into three categories: common, divine, and wolf-class. An effect that strengthens one type may become a shackle for another. You must pay close attention.”

Seeing Chen Fan silent, the Elder prompted, “Well?”

“Ah, oh, I get it now.” Chen Fan had been drowsy, briefly dozing and forgetting parts of the explanation.

“You actually fell asleep? Fine, I’ll repeat it again.” The Elder rolled his eyes and recited everything once more.

This time Chen Fan listened attentively and yawned. “All done? Anything else to add?”

“Nothing else, I believe. My memory’s pretty good,” the Elder said, stroking his beard.

“Then there must be something missing. Never mind, I’ll ask when I get tricked,” Chen Fan said, kicking the blanket and sprawling out to sleep soundly.

The Elder, cigar clenched between his teeth, gazed thoughtfully at the full moon outside the window. “I didn’t expect you to not be paralyzed with fear this time. Looks like you’re getting used to the host’s life.”

“I’m numb to it now. If you don’t mind telling me one of your weaknesses, I’d be happy to listen,” Chen Fan said, turning away to continue sleeping.

“You’re talking nonsense. Except for a slight fear of heights, I have no weaknesses. You know, as an all-powerful system, I wouldn’t have the same flaws that mere mortals do. Tell me, what do you think my weakness is...”

“Enough, go to sleep. I have to get up at seven tomorrow. You old literary fool, go whisper your sweet nothings to the moon.” Chen Fan grew impatient, grabbing a lump of the blanket and covering the Elder Card.

The Elder said nothing, poked his head out, and resumed staring at the moon.

The black clouds gradually dispersed, and the full moon filled in its last missing piece, revealing her entire true face.

“Hey, wake up,” the Elder urged.

“Huh? Is it morning already?”

Chen Fan rubbed his tired eyes, feeling as if only a short time had passed. The girl from his dream hadn’t even gotten close when someone shouted at him.

“It’s not even one o’clock yet. What are you doing, Elder?” Chen Fan glanced at the clock, then out the window, grumbling as he lazily lay back down.

“The New Moon event is about to happen. Don’t sleep—go accept the mission,” the Elder called again.

“What? I’m so tired. What if I don’t accept? I can just wait until next month,” Chen Fan curled up, clearly not wanting to get up.

The Elder warned grimly, “Then it’ll twist, deform, explode.”

“You old geezer, you know you’re just scaring me, but I still have to believe you.” Chen Fan suddenly perked up, flung aside the curtain, and climbed out of bed.

“What do I do now?” Following the Elder’s instructions, Chen Fan went down to a vacant spot below the dormitory.

“Just shout at the moon, ‘New Moon, grant me your power,’” the Elder said.

“Seriously? Do I have to embarrass myself like that? Feels like I’m an idiot,” Chen Fan protested reluctantly.

“Not only that, you need to reach a certain decibel level, or the full moon won’t hear your call,” the Elder added.

“Damn it, shouting here this late might get me caught by the patrol guards. I’d be in trouble for sure.” Chen Fan hesitated, then seeing no one around, he shouted at the moon, “Moon, grant me your power.”

“That’s wrong. It’s ‘New Moon, grant me your power.’ If you say it wrong, it won’t work,” the Elder corrected.

“Damn moon, making so many demands.” Chen Fan muttered resentfully but reluctantly shouted again, “New Moon, grant me your power.”

The high-hanging full moon neither smiled enchantingly nor changed its gentle reflected light.

“Are you sure you remembered the phrase correctly?” Chen Fan asked the Elder when nothing happened.

“I’m absolutely sure. Try saying it a few more times.”

“New Moon, grant me your power.”

“New Moon, grant me your power.”

“New Moon, grant me your power.”

The full moon remained unchanged.

“Fake full moon. I’m going back to sleep.” Chen Fan stretched; he was far too exhausted.

“How can this be? Wait a little longer,” the Elder Card moved in front of Chen Fan, blocking his way.

“Fine, I’ll wait a bit more.” Chen Fan yawned and turned his gaze back toward the moon.

From afar, several bright lights swung back and forth. Chen Fan recognized them as patrol flashlights. Seeing they were still some distance away, he took off running.

“You old geezer, you almost got me killed again.”
