Chapter 050: The King's Demise in the Chill of Autumn 16
After Huangfu Shang left the restaurant’s kitchen, he returned to the Huangfu family home.
He no longer refused the position Huangfu Lie had arranged for him and worked diligently and earnestly at his job.
Seeing this, Huangfu Lie felt particularly at ease. He believed his young cousin had finally seen through that woman and come back to work.
His mood improved markedly at the thought, and that evening, after working overtime until nine o’clock, he prepared to leave, only to notice that the lights in his cousin’s office were still on.
He approached and found the door ajar. Pushing it open, he saw his young cousin sitting at the desk, his face stern, tapping away at the computer.
He raised a hand and knocked on the door. When Huangfu Shang looked up, he smiled and asked, “Shang, why are you still here so late?”
“There’s just a bit more work to do. I’ll leave once I finish.” Huangfu Shang seemed surprised to see him but answered promptly.
“Don’t overdo it. You can always finish the work tomorrow,” Huangfu Lie said, feeling gratified by his cousin’s diligence.
Huangfu Shang paused mid-keystroke and said, “I want to finish tonight. Tomorrow’s the weekend—I’ve made plans with Sister Xiaoya.”
“Oh, you’re meeting someone, then you should…” Huangfu Lie began, but then he froze, eyes wide, and hurried over to his cousin. Seeing no unusual expression on his face, he asked, “You’re going on a date with Wang Xiaoya tomorrow?”
Why does that woman still linger like a ghost?
“Mm, the zoo. Sister Xiaoya said she wants to see the pandas,” Huangfu Shang replied without looking up.
“But didn’t you…” break up? Huangfu Lie recalled his cousin’s reaction that day, swallowed the words, and instead asked, “Weren’t you two at odds before? Did you make up?”
Huangfu Shang glanced at the source of their conflict and nodded. “Mm. Sister Xiaoya said that everyone falls for a couple of idiots during their awkward teenage years, but now she only likes me. So we made up.”
The “idiot” in question felt his brow twitch. “Shang…” I never liked her.
“She only likes me now,” Huangfu Shang suddenly repeated.
The atmosphere between them instantly grew strange, and as Huangfu Lie was about to say something, his phone rang, shattering the odd tension.
He rubbed his brow and, upon seeing the caller ID, his heart skipped a beat. “Hello?”
“Huangfu Lie, my stomach hurts like hell right now. Get over here, fast!” a powerful female voice barked from the other end.
Huangfu Lie was startled by her words. “What happened? Where are you? Are you at the dorm? Wait for me, I’m coming right now.”
He spoke as he hurried out.
Huangfu Shang, noticing his cousin’s panic, realized something had happened. He closed his laptop after a moment’s thought and followed.
Seeing him catch up, Huangfu Lie said nothing more. He floored the accelerator and the car shot forward like an arrow.
“What happened?” Huangfu Shang asked.
“Your sister-in-law’s in trouble,” Huangfu Lie replied, his lips pressed into a tight line.
Huangfu Shang was baffled. Sister-in-law? Where did he get a sister-in-law? He knew his cousin was still single.
“It’s a long story. Your sister-in-law is carrying my child, but she won’t marry me. She just called to say her stomach hurts—I don’t know if your nephew will be okay!” Huangfu Lie’s voice was thick with worry. At this, the car sped even faster, racing through several red lights—thankfully, it was late and the roads were empty.
Huangfu Shang felt overwhelmed by the information and was at a loss for words.
All he knew now was that Huangfu Lie had a girlfriend, and she was pregnant. Pregnancy meant they’d get married, and if they got married, he could never compete with him for Sister Xiaoya!
With that final realization, Huangfu Shang felt jubilant fireworks exploding in his mind.
Huangfu Lie, tense with worry, didn’t notice the twisted, gleeful expression on his cousin’s face. If he had, he might have been shocked.
Huangfu Shang found the scenery outside the car window increasingly familiar. Soon, the car swung beautifully to a halt outside the dorm building where he had lived for over a month.
Following his cousin, he arrived at the door opposite his old dorm room.
Huangfu Shang stopped, an incredulous thought rising in his mind. His cousin strode forward without hesitation, opened the door, and called anxiously, “Ouyang Zining!”
An ambulance arrived, bustling and noisy.
Pregnant Ouyang Zining was carried onto the ambulance.
An hour later, the doctor stood in the hospital room, addressing the tense Huangfu Lie, “Mr. Huangfu, please don’t worry. Your wife just ate something bad—she has an upset stomach, but it’s nothing serious.”
“I’m not his wife,” Ouyang Zining, now free from pain, half-reclined on the bed, correcting the doctor.
The doctor looked confused.
“And what about the baby?” Huangfu Lie ignored her reply and continued questioning the doctor.
The doctor glanced at the woman and then at Huangfu Lie. “Everything’s fine—both mother and child are healthy.”
“That’s good.” Huangfu Lie felt the taut string in his mind finally relax. He repeated softly, “It’s good that everything’s fine.”
Since Ouyang Zining was pregnant, the doctor advised her to stay another night for observation.
The Huangfu family’s CEO certainly didn’t lack for hospital fees; he nodded, signed, and agreed.
Once the doctor and nurses left, he turned, his expression complex, and looked at Ouyang Zining’s pale face. “After you’re discharged tomorrow, move into the Huangfu family home.”
“I won’t,” Ouyang Zining refused outright.
Huangfu Lie’s brows furrowed deeply. He couldn’t fathom this woman’s thoughts. Across the country, countless women dreamed of moving into the Huangfu family home and becoming its young mistress, yet she refused.
Unlike the glamorous women outside, she was truly different.
