Chapter 109: Guests
Next, please welcome today’s assistant singing guest, Mr. Mo Han!
Yun Feifei gazed down at Mo Han from the stage, her face adorned with a captivating smile. She extended an inviting gesture, fluid and graceful.
Yet the crowd below fell into an abrupt silence. Everyone held their breath, eyes fixed on Yun Feifei as she searched the sea of faces for Mo Han’s figure.
Many felt a surge of envy. To share the stage with Yun Feifei in a duet—that would be exhilarating beyond words. Such a chance had somehow slipped to someone else, igniting fresh waves of jealousy.
“Miss Feifei, I must apologize,” Mo Han replied, unconcerned by the envy swirling around him. “I suffer from motion sickness, seasickness, and stage fright. You’d best find someone else.”
He could sing, of course, but the songs held no appeal for him. Yun Feifei’s hits, in particular, were beyond his repertoire.
The stadium erupted the moment his words reached the audience. Fans who had expected their idol to accept the invitation now cursed Mo Han’s refusal, the air thick with outrage. Those seated nearby seethed with the urge to strike him down.
This was an insult to their idol!
Li An’an and Fang Zhujun exchanged astonished glances. Mo Han had turned down Yun Feifei’s invitation outright.
“Feifei, ignore him,” one voice rang out. “He doesn’t know your songs. Skip these fake fans!”
“He’s an idiot. What could he possibly sing? If he climbs up there, it’ll be a disaster!”
“My Feifei, let me help you instead. Don’t let this fool mock the real fans!”
The crowd surged with fervor.
Yun Feifei felt a flicker of embarrassment. Still, she pressed on. “Mr. Mo, if you refuse to join us, I truly cannot step down.”
Mo Han had scarcely finished speaking when Li An’an and Fang Zhujun seized his arms, one on each side, and hauled him upward. They had spent hours volunteering together, and Li An’an’s pleasant impression had thawed Fang Zhujun’s reserve.
“You’re a grown man—what shame is there?” Fang Zhujun remarked.
“Yeah, look how awkward Yun Feifei is,” Li An’an added with a laugh. “I’m her fan too.”
Mo Han shrugged helplessly as he was pushed onto the stage by the two women.
“Everyone, please welcome our special guest!” Yun Feifei clapped warmly.
Though the fans below grumbled, they still joined in the applause.
“Mr. Mo, I heard you’ve been volunteering here all day. What are your thoughts?” Yun Feifei asked once the clapping faded.
He was volunteering?
The audience that had booed him moments earlier fell silent. Volunteering was always worthy of praise.
Some who had just cursed him now felt ashamed.
Mo Han considered the question. “Actually, I came here to volunteer simply to accompany my wife.”
A ripple of laughter rose from the crowd—not at his words, but because he sounded so genuine, so unpretentious. Had another man stood there, he would have spun the conversation toward self-praise.
Mo Han did no such thing. Instead, many women stole glances toward Li An’an and Fang Zhujun, though they could not tell which was Mo Han’s wife. It was clearly one of them.
“Your husband loves you dearly,” Fang Zhujun said, glancing at Li An’an with a trace of envy.
“Still… not bad,” Li An’an replied, smiling shyly.
In truth, Mo Han cherished her far more than she could ever believe.
“Then later?” Yun Feifei prompted, still smiling. “Surely you felt something.”
“Later?” Mo Han replied, his gaze drifting to the volunteers below. “I believe every true volunteer is magnificent. Their selfless dedication and quiet sacrifices made tonight’s concert possible. Of course, I must thank you as well for your contributions to our Qinzhou Charity Foundation. The people who need help—and we ourselves—owe you our gratitude.”
His words were neither flowery nor false. The crowd erupted in thunderous applause.
“Thank you,” Yun Feifei continued, voice ringing with conviction. “I only wanted to do a little for those in need. Volunteers are truly wonderful. If everyone gives a little love, this world will become a beautiful place!”
She bent forward to bow toward the audience.
“Feifei, I love you…”
“Feifei, I love you…”
Beside the waves of applause, screams rose like mountains and seas. The volunteers wept with emotion, moved beyond words by Mo Han’s sincerity and Yun Feifei’s heartfelt words.
Even Li An’an and Fang Zhujun felt tears prick their eyes. They, too, were volunteers today.
“Next, I will sing a song of gratitude with volunteer representative Mr. Mo, to share with everyone—and with our lovely volunteers,” Yun Feifei said when the applause softened.
“Perhaps I could accompany you,” Mo Han suggested.
His singing was passable, but accompaniment suited him better. Talent, perhaps.
As the son of the Mo family, he had studied music from childhood. At twelve, when Jiang Zhizhong brought him to Qinzhou, the older man had encouraged him to practice instruments.
Yun Feifei’s eyes sparkled. “A saxophone, please.”
Mo Han accepted the instrument without ceremony and began to play, guided by memory.
A clear, soaring melody filled the air. The venue fell hushed, as though a silver thread had been cast into the sky—radiant, dazzling. It seemed the voice of heaven itself, pure and serene.
The music drowned out chatter, mockery, confusion, and scorn.
Mo Han appeared ordinary, yet his fingers on the saxophone produced extraordinary sounds. It was like a flock of auspicious clouds drifting across the blue sky, or a streak of sunset light painting the horizon.
Yun Feifei studied Mo Han for a moment, then sang along the melody:
“I came from somewhere, like a speck of dust…”
Her voice wrapped the audience in enchantment, erasing their sense of self.
Li An’an watched Mo Han play for Yun Feifei, her gaze radiant with pride. This was her husband—the man who loved her beyond measure.
The song ended. The stage lights suddenly dimmed for a single heartbeat of darkness. In that instant, a black shadow darted from Yun Feifei’s fingertips.
Mo Han caught it, returned the saxophone, glanced at her once, and stepped down from the stage.
